I am in love with the name Isla - and want it for my baby that is due in July. When I came up with the name I didn't even know it was a real name, but now that I'm in love with it I seem to be seeing it everywhere (on message boards) is it going to get popular??

I see it creeping up on lists, but I've never met one. Will (for a boy) is a "popular" name, but I have a 14yos named Will and have met less than a handful of Wills in the last 14 years.

I checked the SSA going back 100 years, and Isla appeared only once: as #955 in1908.

I don't think it will. It's a gorgeous name, though. It will probably be in the top 1000, as pp said.. but so are Chana, Mireya, Lucero, Bethzy (#878!), and Belen (all girl names). How many of those do you know? I know one Isla who is about 24. I doubt it will suddenly jump to the top and you love it, it's a beautiful name, so you should use it!

I love the name as well, and really doubt that it become even well known, let alone popular. GO for it!!! (By the way, I only know 1 Isla who is 18. She loves her name.)

I've never in my life meant an Isla. I hear it on this board a lot but never seen it used. I love it but I couldn't never use it. I say go for it! I highly doubt it will ever be insanely popular.

While I think Isla is popular on message boards, I don't think that many people have actually named their children Isla. I have never met nor heard of anyone (even on message boards!) giving their real child the first name Isla, though I have heard it for a middle name. It probably also depends on the area you live in, but if you really love the name, who cares. You only get so many chances to name your children, so make it count and go with something you love! Good luck!

I don't think it'll ever make the top 20 or even top 50.

The first time I ever heard the name was the girl from Wedding Crashers who played Gloria. Her name is Isla Fisher and she's probably in her late 20s, early 30s. I think it's a very pretty name, but it definitely has the same type of feel as Ava and Ella, two names that are definitely popular and still going strong. I bet the name will get more popular, but I doubt it will ever be as common as either of those two anytime soon.
