Hi, everyone, I had a dr appt yesterday (Monday) and he scheduled a sono for me. I wasnt nervous or anything but I asked him what this was for? He said he wanted to look at my baby's heart, liver and kidneys...ok no problem right, well then I asked him if we could tell what we are having yet? and he said that if the baby cooperates then we could see what it is. I am only 17 weeks pregnant right now and my sono is on wed. I am just really nervous that when we go to the sono and we see the baby, that we wont be able to see what it is. I know we all start out as girls but I dont want something popping up later (if you know what I mean) and we are expecting a girl...I will be very upset. I am greedy and I want to know what I'm having. I guess my real question is isnt it a little early to see what I'm having, I thouhgt they did that when I was around 5 months or so. Please help so I can ease my mind about this....Thanks a lot :)

I'm not an expert but I know sometimes they can tell at 17 weeks but it's not as certain as it is if you have a sono later in the pregnancy.

I had a friend who found out at 17 wks. but you might have another sono. at a later point. My doc. was very set on waiting until I was 20 wks. just for the development to be that much further to do all their important measurements on baby's organs and stuff. Maybe ask your doc. if this is something that can be put off for just a couple more weeks.

My practice does a sono at every appt, so they take the first guess at gender at 12 weeks and confirm at 16 (assuming the kiddo cooperates and shoes what he/she's got!). I have about 10 friends at this practice who've had babies and not a single one has ever been wrong...even the frist guess. Hopefully they'll tell you how confident they are based on the view that they get. If you only get one sono for your entire preganancy, you might want to wait until around 20 weeks when they can take all the other critical measurements...but if you trust your doc I'd do whatever they recommend...good luck!
