I was talking to my sister about different names yesterday and she reminded me of a friend of hers names Cleve. I hated it when I was younger but it could grow on me. My sister is 60 so this must be an old name. Also I really like the name Leland. What do you think? My daughters Soccer coach is Lawrence. Not bad for a MN maybe.

I just looked up Cleve and it could be used as a mn for Cleveland which I don't like at all. What do you think?

I like Leland better then Cleve, although I know a little boy named William Cleve (Cleve was after his grandfather). Leland is ok, it reminds me of the tree Leland Cypress.

That's interesting that you know a Cleve. Maybe it's alright. I was just sure that Cleve just came from the tiny little town where we came from and that no others existed. William Cleve is kinda nice together. I just looked it up and it can be a nn for Cleveland. Don't like Cleveland at all. Not into cities much! Thanks.

The William that I know never goes by Cleve it is just his middle name, but we are from a fairly small town too, and I had never heard that before until he was born. I think he is 8 or 9 now and he just goes by William.

Cleve wouldn't be my style, but is similar as in saying with Eve, i would think of Cleve as a boy name since is similar to Clive or Clyde (which i've known my grandparents men friend's names to be.)

for Lawrence, is rather common now, especially for mn, but i love the thought of nn *Lance* for Lawrence.. of course, traditonal is Larry or Lenny (NMS), Lane could be a possibility, tho i'd see Lane as a girl's name.
aslo is, Lark, Lake, Ace, Reese, Lawson, Lars, ...
(oh and Laurence is common spelling also)

I would have to say no to Cleve. Its just too harsh for my tastes. And Leland reminds me of the show "Twin Peaks". But Im sure thats just a quirky association that I have. I think it could be a cute name. I like Lawrence, and like a pp said, lots of nn possibilities with it.

I agree that I don't care for Larry for a nn for Lawrence. All of the Lawrence's that I've know have spelled it this way. Maybe different spellings for different areas. My daughters coach doesn't go by a nn just Lawrence. Maybe he didn't like Larry either!
