Is your desire to call her by her full name or just Mary? I think Mary Amelia is beautiful (and love that it honors both sides of your families) if you'll call her Mary but might be a bit of a mouthful if you call her by her full name. I'm a big fan of the double Mary names and I think there are lots of ways to freshen it up:

Mary Paige

Mary Hollis

Mary Quinn

Mary Scarlett

Mary Brooke

Mary Belle

Mary Brynn

Mary Allison

Mary Leah

Mary Claire

or more traditional:

Mary Ellen

Mary Catherine/Mary Kate

Mary Margaret

Mary Anne

My friend just had a baby named Mary Shannon - she plans on calling her by both names. I thought that was really cute. I have a daughter named Amelia Maria, so I think Mary Amelia is really nice. Old fashioned is in right now so I wouldn't worry about being old fashioned. Besides, you'll never regret honoring someone you love.

I like Mary Amelia, and I like that she's named for two important women to you.

I had a friend named Mary Alice and she exclusively went by "M.A." which I thought was cool!

I have a friend with a little Mary Katherine -- no nickname.

P.S. Tell DH that Ella is actually VERY in these days!

I actually like both of those suggested middle names with Mary! As someone else already said, those "old fashioned" names are really coming back right now, so it would not be as weird to the child as you are thinking. I have recently heard names like Gertrude, Penelope, and other similar used as first names. Also, Ella, Ellie, Elsa, and other variations are names I have been hearing recently. I haven't heard of any Amelia's, but my point is that it will fit in with other girl's names in her age group. I also really like that you would be honoring both sides of the family with that. Good Luck!
