Hi-- I have just 5 weeks left before my baby is due to show up and I have not yet nailed down a name. Our last name is O'Bryan and my two children as well as my husband have Irish first names. Therefore, I need either an Irish name or a name that is sort of neutral.
It's the girl name that I'm stuck on. After much searching on the Irish baby name site I finally decided on Neila/Neala pronounced Neel-ah. My husband mulled it over and likes it but he wants to name the baby Kate. I like Kate but since this is my third child I thought I would try something different, something you don't ever really hear and that's why I want Neila. I did a poll and Kate won but just by 4 votes. So, my question is 1--What do you HONESTLY think and 2--If I go with Neila what would a good middle name be? Probably something more traditional, right? I was going to do Neila Grace but my husband doesn't like that!!
Sorry so long. Thanks for your help!!!!!!!!!

You and I are in the same boat!! DH & I are on #3 and torn between a common name (of course, Kate, which DH LOVES) and Scarlett, which is so out of the box that we feel everyone around us will hate it. SO, I DO feel your pain!! I don't remember how I voted on your names... but I do remember Neila. I liked the sound of the name, but didn't love the spelling because it was so close to Neil. Are you attached to spelling it the proper Irish way? I liked Neela or Neala better personally. But I can tell you that I am running into SO MANY Kates in my younger son's gym classes (Kathleen, Katie, Kaitlyn, and Caitlyn... no joke) that I really would vote for Neila!
OK, middle name. Does DH only like Kate or does he want it to be nn from a longer name? Because then you could do Neila Kathleen or Neila Katherine and it's a nice little compromise to throw him! Actually, even Neila Kate isn't too bad now that I think about it.
KATE KATE KATE KATE
I feel really stongly about this!
I really like Neila. I think it's very pretty and it's unique. I love Kate, it's a classic, but it is rather popular (perrenially, not trendy) so I understand you wanting something more unique.
Have you considered Neila Kate or Neila Kathleen? I love those combinations and think both sound nice with O'Bryan, and then you are compromising and you both get to use the name you love. He could even call her Kate as a nn. (My name is Meredith Anne, but called me Annie as a nn)

I like Neila Grace much better than Kate! There are about a million Kate's out there, and I know of NO Neila's. NOt that there is anything wrong with Kate, but I prefer Neila. What about Neila Kate?? I think that sounds great!!!!

I didn't see your other poll, I don't think, but I like Neala. I think it's very pretty and prefer that spelling to the Neila spelling. Either one sounds beautiful, though. What about Neala/Neila Kate or some other Kate variation like the others have suggested?
My DH and I really struggled with DD#2, so I feel your pain. He loved Katherine (nn Kate/Katie) and Erin. I loved Amelia, Eliza, Elena, and Ava. We searched until we found Julianna, and I decided on the nn Annie although he calls her Julie sometimes, and that was our compromise.
Good luck making a final decision!

If you want to stick to Irish names, then definatley go for Neila. Its sounds lovely and feminine.
Think about:
Neila Kate or
Neila Katherine
Good Luck
I actually like both names (although I prefer Kate as a nn for a longer fn). I prefer Neila (this spelling, btw) for the same reasons you've mentioned. Think of it this way: will you feel worse if you don't use Neila or if you don't use Kate? You'd probably feel a lot worse giving up on Neila, because tons of people you know or come in contact with have/will use Kate in some form (so it wouldn't feel as much like you missed out on the name that felt so personally "yours," if that makes sense ... anyway, that's how I felt when we were deciding on our second daughter, Devanie's, name).
Also thought I'd mention, since you're obviously not sold on Kate, that Kate O'Bryan is the exact name of the character on the Drew Carey show. So if you want to talk dh out of that one, maybe bring that up as something you wouldn't like to deal with all the time (ie. people asking if she's named after the show or if you're big Drew Carey fans, if you're from Cleveland, etc. LOL). Not that it would necessarily bother you that much (or that every single person in the world would notice), but you could kind of "play it up" if you're really against using that name. ;) Just some ammo in Neila's favor! HTH!
