I'm wondering, Agnes, cute or frumpy?

Hi again everybody,
I originally asked about what people liked Audrey, Ashley, Adriana, Agnes or Genieve (Genevieve)etc? I want to thank people for their responses. My DH and I were having trouble deciding on a name especially, DH. We decided on Agnes (family name) and now there is an outcry from family and friends that it is mean to name our baby this. What do people think? I don't want her made fun of on the playground or later in life. Our thoughts were that the name is old fashioned and therefore time to revive it.
Let me know. Help!

I'm with you- I think it's adorable! And even if not everyone thinks its not yet ready for a revival, maybe that's a good thing! When she is, maybe, 20yo... there will be some baby Agnes' and she will seem ahead of the times. I think it's a great choice.

I wish I could say I liked them but I just don't. If it were between Agnes and Agnessa, I'd go with Agnes (at least it's a real name). But again, it feels very stiff/frumpy to me. Surely there are other family options. I just have to agree with your friends and family that it's going too far...
Other names I think fall into the same style category as Agnes (if you can't imagine naming your little baby girl these names, please re-consider Agnes):
Bertha
Beulah
Doris
Ethel
Eunice
Gertrude
Gladys
Hester
Hortense
Irma
Mildred
Myrna
Shirley
Thelma
Velma
Wanda
I really like Agnes. If you think it's too "grown up" for a baby or small child, then some cute nicknames for it are Aggie, Ness, Nessa, or Nessie. :)
Honestly, though, I could definitely see a cute, spunky little three-year-old Agnes running around. I also picture an Agnes being a bright child and later a spunky, independent woman.

I adore Agnes. Very sweet. And if you plan on using a nn, little Aggie will fit right in next to Abby, Addie, Maddy, Maggie, etc. Really, it's perfectly fitting with the current old-fashioned revival names, with the cute, current nn to boot! Certainly doesn't seem "mean" to me.
I also love Agatha, which is a bit softer IMO, but since Agnes is a family name I'm not suggesting you change it. ;)
I'd simply disregard the negative comments for exactly what they are -- rude remarks by people who obviously have no clue about baby naming trends. They're probably the sort that think Emma is also too old-fashioned, or that Madison is some quaint new discovery. LOL Just reassure yourself that their tastes simply aren't as developed as your own, and they'd probably dislike anything with even a modicum of class or style.

I'm with those who vote against Agnes. While I agree that you can ignore the rude comments, will SHE be able to ignore them when she's 6,8,12 years old. Remember that kids can be cruel.
