I would love your opinions on Vanessa...

Is it ethnic-sounding?

Vanessa is not "ethnic-sounding" to me, and it does not seem dated. I like it a lot -- it's pretty and feminine but not at all frilly, and it would work well at any age.

I think Vanessa is a really pretty name. My first association is Vanessa Huxtable from the Cosby Show, but I've known others IRL too. I don't think it's ethnic sounding. I guess it might be a little dated to the 80's (maybe b/c of the TV show) but I don't think it's passe or anything; I'd still use it. It's not like Michelle or Ashley or something!

Good luck!

Hello. I've been collecting and studying names most of my life, and I felt compelled to respond about Vanessa.

I don't think it sounds ethnic but I do think it sounds kind of dated, not as bad as like Jennifer though

hello!! well, i like the name vanessa-i think its really pretty-i like most v names-victoria, valerie, valyn, and my oldest dd is violet. i like valentine too , to be honest(my mom kept trying to get me to name my youngest dd valentine because she was due on valentines day-and honestly i was going to use it as part of her middle name-isabelle valentina grace-but she wasnt born until 2:05 am on the 15th...so i didnt)anyway, im not sure on any other nns beyond ness, nessa, van, or vanny(kinda close to fanny though-lol)...but im a firm believer in-you can always call the child by her whole first name or you might find another nn for her-my oldest dd isnt vi, although she will answer to it-i call her goon...my isabelle isnt belle-shes izzy. she wont even answer to belle and sometimes wont answer to isabelle-lol. if you love vanessa, then use it. its not too popular, but its not way out in left field either. you can pronounce it and unless you use a different spelling, its pretty straight forward as far as spelling. take care!!
