What does everyone think about choosing a middle name the same as one of the baby's cousins? When I told my sister we were considering the middle name William after our father's middle name, she spoke as though it were wrong because she's already chosen it for one of her son's.

I don't get it, personally. After all, how is that different that grandfather and grandson sharing a middle name? And it's also noteworthy that my sister and I an one of our cousins all share the same middle name. But I want other opinions :)

If it's a family name, I say there's nothing wrong with it!

I have two cousins both named John. Personally, I wouldn't do it, but I don't see anything wrong with it. We always called one John Robert and one Johnny Parker. No problems with it in my family! They are both named after the same grandpa!

I think that it is fine. I don't think that your sister should be able to have dibs on a name. Tons of people in my family have shared names, nearly everyone in my fathers generation had Mary somewhere in their name. I know of a family where Gerald married Margaret Mary. Their four children were Mary Margaret, Margaret Mary, Geraldine Mary and Gerald. There was a joke that Gerald Jr. should have had the MN Margaret.

Good Luck. Families cause so much stress in the naming business.
