Intro and maybe some opinions?

Hi all!

I just found this site (and parentsoup.com) and have been lurking around a bit. I'm Nicole. DH and I are planning to TTC in May- a bit of a ways away but its never too early to think of names! I wondered if I could get some opinions about names we've thought about.

We both really love the name Madden for a boy (and not b/c John Madden) but I wondered what other people think about this. We don't really have any other names we *love* for a boy. Some that are so-so to us are:

Gage

Trey

Mason

Laken

Pierce

Auden

For a girl we love Ryleigh/Riley. Girl names are so much easier to pick than boys. I tend to like more unisex girl names. Runners up (some DH doesn't care for too much though) are:

Brynn (but have a 'B' last name- ick)

Ava

Morgan

Kendall

Raegan

Audra

I really like more uncommon names, but in our area and amongst our friends, more 'usual' names are popular (Hailey, Emma, Benjamin, and our nieces are a little more unusual Lia and Shae) so I wonder how people would think of names like Kendall for a girl and Auden for a boy. So when I think of that, I tend to lean towards more trendy, popular names. Ohhh. Well, at least we're not pregnant yet so I have time to worry. I love some names that have been mentioned on the parentsoup board (Auden, Berit, Sutton) but don't know how well they'd go over here. Does anyone else have more untraditional named kids in an area where more common names are popular?

So anyway, I'll probably lurk a bit more and maybe post some. Love all the names mentioned here!

Thanks!

Nicole

Hi Nicole!

Welcome. I don't have kids yet either -- my husband and I are probably going to start trying next year. So we have something in common. I like names, and I enjoy posting on the board during my "downtime" at work.

Anyway, I am kind of weird in my name taste -- I prefer more traditional names overall, but I definitely am more adventurous with girls' names. I don't mind if they are unique or unisex. With boys, my tastes definitely run more mainstream. So you can take what I say with a grain of salt. But FYI - my friend just had a baby last month and named her Keelin, and even though her family and friends all favor more traditional names, the reaction to the name was very positive (she didn't tell people the name choice until after the baby was born and named). But everyone has commented that it's unique, in a good way. So I think that if you go with someting a little more "out there," people will definitely adjust and probably even like it! (but you may want to keep the name a secret and let them be surprised rather than solicit opinions way in advance).

Out of your boys' names, I like Mason and Pierce the best. Madden is not bad in my opinion, but with all of the Madisons and Madelyns with nn Maddy, it almost like a girls' name to me. Maybe Maddon would look more masculine? Also, I just tend to like names with a nn, and I wouldn't want it shortened to Mad. But I know some people hate nicknames, so that may be a non-issue for you. Laken is also a name I like for a girl more than a boy. Is Auden pronounced AW-din or Ow-din? I have actually not heard that name before.

Riley is very cute (I like this spelling), but I think it's gaining popularity. I really like all the names on your girls' list except Morgan. I love Brynn, too, but our last name also begins with B and is a one-syllable name, so that's out. I like Raegan spelled Regan. Audra and Ava are very pretty and feminine. And I really like Kendall as a unisex girls' name a lot!

Some other names' you may like for girls: Aubrey, Carson, Ellery, Hayden, Landry, Tierney, Whitney.

Hope this helps!

I really like the name Kendall for a girl too. My favorite combo with Kendall is Kendall Carrington. But, yet, Nicole it is fun and entertaining to think of names and I can think of no other way to improve a person's penmanship. Plus in addition to adding more brain cells trying to think of all of those combos. My cousin has a daughter named Sadie Brynn and I think Brynn is another nice name. Brynn ? with your B last name shouldn't be all that bad. Well I wish you the best of luck.
