It was a town near where I grew up...there were a lot of Greek names used in our area (Ithaca, Ionia, Clio, Atlas...) so that's what comes right to mind. I can kind of see the charm as a place name (after Greece--not after the town near us) but since there are so many cities in the US that borrow their names from Greek places, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people have a similar "we played football against them" reaction.

It is also a town near me. I tend not to like the sound of place names as people names, but for the ones I *do* like, I prefer them on boys. Ithaca is nms.

I understand where you're coming from -- I would love it if Bethesda was a usable girl's name -- but I think this one is too associated with a particular place (at least on the East Coast, where I live). You could probably get away with it in California...

This would be especially cool with a very plain last name. Doesn't Ithaca Jones sound like a badass Pam Grier character?
