Just Jake?

I LOVE the name Jake but neither my husband or I care much for Jacob (plus it sounds odd with our Indian last name). I think of "Jake" as more of a nickname - are there other names that "Jake" is a nick name for? Is Jake as a first name too informal?

Finally (and this may be too weird) - what are your thoughts on selecting a first and middle name with the letters that combine to make Jake? "Vijay Vivek" would fit well with our last name, heritage and all the letters there.

Also, if I choose and Indian name for a first child do I need to select one for any brothers/sisters he/she may have? My favorite girls names are not Indian and should I go with Vijay would it sound odd if his siblings had names like Elizabeth or Clarissa? (I never thought much about the sibling set until I read this board)

Thanks so much!

Hi First, I think Jake as a first name is fine. I like it alot and I don't think it HAS to be a nickname. Many people do Jack or John as first names so I think Jake is the same sorta thing. Cute choice. I am not sure if I understand your second question. Are you asking if Vijay Vivek is an good name (first and middle)? I am not familiar with Indian names, so I really do not know the answer to that question. If you like Vijay Vivek and would like to honor your heritage etc.., then go ahead and call him Jake for short. Good idea. I think that is a good compromise. Last, I do NOT think you need to name sibs Indian names if you choose Vijay Vivek, especially if you are calling him Jake on a daily basis. Best wishes - Tara

I think just Jake is fine. It actually originated from Jack, so I think it would be OK to have John, nn Jake. Or even James, nn Jake.

Vijay Vivek is a good way to get Jake, too. I would find it odd, however, to have one child with both names of Indian origins, and subsequent kids with no Indian names at all. If you had an Elizabeth with Indian middle name, it would seem like a more cohesive sib set to me.

Good luck!

I went to HS with a Vijay, I think you can use the letters to NN him Jake. I agree with your preference of just Jake over Jacob.

Good Luck

I think there's a big trend toward using names that had previously been thought of as nicknames but stand on their own merit as a first name just fine (eg, Jack, Ellie, Lainey, Belle, etc.) and Jake is one of them. I know several Jakes who are "just Jakes" and I personally agree with you about liking Jake and not Jacob. I, too am not a big fan of Jacob, however, Jake rakes in there among my Top 10 boy names.

Go for Jake!!!

I think Jake can stand on its own, but I love the idea of naming him Vijay Vivek and calling him Jake.

We have an 18-month old nn Ike, full name Isaac. I really wish we would have just named him Ike -- we went with the conventional "It sounds too much like a nickname" thought. But IKE is what I liked, not Isaac, and we never ever call him Isaac. I have a couple of friends who have a hard time with "Ike" (I guess!) because they will call him Isaac instead, and it sounds "wrong" to my ears. So here's another vote for just naming him Jake if you want to. I also like the Vijay option.
