I received a link to a local "cute baby" contest and thought you might enjoy the names. Interestingly enough, I didn't recognize the email

Regarding "Peighton" ... I have to admit, I was SO surprised all the

I fully expected to find Abigail (only one!) and Kaitlyn's names on there (and NOT to find Devanie's LOL), but I was a bit surprised to see an Ayla. ;) As long as it doesn't get popular, it still tickles me a bit to see it used.
Loved seeing these:
Adaira, Ambrose, Aonghus, Callum, Colby, Damian, Enzo, Felicity, Leland, Meredith, Morgan (on a boy), Nora (two of them ... rising faster than I'd hoped? LOL), Tess, Trystan (but dislike that this will be seen as a trendy Y addition) and Zayd.
Surprised there was more than one:
Nora, Autumn, Caleb, Ruben or Tommy (if it's a given name)
NOT surprised there were a number of:
Aidan/Aiden/Aden, Alex/Alexander/Alexandra/Alexis (nine altogether), Anthony, Caden/Cayden/Kaden, Connor, Emma, Evan, Hannah, Jack, Jacob/Jakub, Jayden (but no properly-spelled Jadons ... hmm), Jonah, Kaitlyns/Kaylas/Kaylees, Madison, Matthew, McKenna (and the misspelled Mc/Macks), Noah, Peyton/Peighton, Riley/Ryleigh and Zachary ... I hear all of those a LOT.
These always seem dated to me, despite continuing popularity:
Alyssa, Autumn, Briana, Chase/Chayse, Corey, Gabrielle, Jayson, Jenna, Jennifer, Jessica, Jordan, Paige, Samantha, Taylor, Tory, Tyler and Zachary.
Really dislike these (name or simply spelling):
Aijalynn, Annaliese, Aireanna, Braelee, Chayse, Delynn (give me the cards ... I'm dealin'! LOL), Heavin (forget Nevaeh/Heaven spelled backwards ... this is Heaven MISspelled forward ROFL), Jayden, Jayson (what? without the Y we'd all assume a short A or something?), Kayson (the joint), Kennady (wanna bet just to shorten to Kenna?), Lizangel, Lorelai (there goes the "we didn't name her for Gilmore Girls" argument!), Trinity, Makena, Makenzi (your Mas are Kena and Kenzi? ... Ma doesn't say Mc), M'khai (th'e punct'uation bugs' m'e ... stick with Mekhi), Alivia, Peighton, Ryleigh and Talon.
Hope everyone else found them as interesting as I did. ;)

Kelli,
My first introduction to the name Ayla was in 1989. I (finally) found a friend in Biology class who didn't think I was a freak for wishing to discuss baby names for more than five minutes (the rest of my friends LOVED to discuss them FOR five minutes, and as you can imagine, those discussions didn't give me much brain food).
Anyway, this friend got in multiple discussions of names with me. I will never forget when she finally admitted her favorite girl name (she was smart enough to claim something else was her favorite name and keep her real favorite to herself - LOL). Ayla Ryan, a double name, she admitted.
It immediately went into one of my notebooks, the one dated 1989- 10th grade. I have never, ever seen a female named Ayla. For over a decade, (until about 2004), it was on my obscure list (and also on my personal top 50). As you know we are steeped in the "If it rhymes with a Top 50 name, then it's both unique and fits in well" trend. Kayla is too popular for most, so you may have noticed the rise in Layla. You also know short, sassy girl names are in huge demand (Ava, Ella). Add to that a lot of parents don't want to veer to far from mainstream but want something a tad different. Alas :( , my beloved Ayla
Ginger
Yes, she's "Ay-la" (or Ail-a, if you use the literal ending sound of Abigail+a). I also love Isla/eye-la, but there was no way dh would have gone for it. That one had separately been nixed by him early on ... something about visions of "eyes" (no pun intended). I actually thought Isla had a chance being one letter off of one of "the twins" names -- Iola (if you recall, Iona and Iola are his g-grandmother and her identical twin). ;) No such luck.
And I have been watching the similar Ava/Kayla/Layla/Jayla et al ... don't worry. It hasn't escaped me. ;) I actually don't mind it becoming more mainstream. Just hoping it's not quite up there with Abby/Addy/Maddy, etc. (which is what I'd hoped to sidestep at least slightly). LOL
Regardless, I do and always will love it. Fits her perfectly, and I still think of hers as my "perfect name" (classic fn, lovely, uncommon mn and a pretty, if not quirky/non-traditional, nn to boot ... not to mention the fact that we both managed to love it equally). Ahh, the collaboration and concession that goes into that perfect name! ;)
