Do you think the name Lorelei Elizabeth is too close to Lauren Elizabeth? DH and I are still looking for a middle name to use with Lorelei. We have a very close family member whose young daughter is named Lauren Elizabeth. Our daughter and her daughter would be second cousins and they would both have the same last name. Do you think this is too close? Should we keep looking for another mn?

Thanks for the input!

If you see this other family often, I think it's too close.

I think it's fine. It's not like you'll use the middle name when you refer to the girls. And the cousins might think it's cool that they have the same middle name.

The mn Elizabeth is rather common, so it would only bother me if the first names were much closer -- Lauren Elizabeth and Laurel Elizabeth, for example. Lorelei is a completely separate name, despite the fact they both have prominent L and R sounds, so it wouldn't bother me if you feel Elizabeth is the mn for you, KWIM?

Still, if it bothers you, you could always keep it in mind but continue looking. You may find something you like even more. ;)

I hope we can find something else we like and agree on. I consider Elizabeth one of those filler names like my own mn, Michelle. DH LOVES the name Emily Elizabeth, though, so I thought this might be a nice way to compromise. I just didn't want to cause any family issues in the process.

yes, I feel like that's too close, even for 2nd cousins, and to me it likely would seem to the other family like you were copying.

Lorelei and Lauren are even close in sound and both from the same "family" (Laura) of names - they're different in style - but if Lorelei ever becomes shortened to a nickname like Lora or Lori - it really is going to seem way too close

but if you feel you love the name Lorelei so much you just have to use it - I'd defintely go with something else in the middle - not even an E or any derivative of Elizabeth

good luck

That is such a pretty name. :) I don't find that it is too close. They will be second cousins and really, you love the name, it's your child. My DH's family is so large that there are some 2nd/3rd cousins with the same names and it has never been an issue. With that in mind, I'm not sharing my names with them until said child is born since I don't care if they eventually have the same name, just not while I'm pregnant. haha. I don't know, I guess the way I feel, is it's your name, your child, odds are somewhere someone else in the world has that name already anyway. Who cares if they live next door?
