Lorelei Michelle - Need more advice!

I know, I know...I keep coming back to this name. However, I also keep debating whether or not to actually use it. Have you ever liked a name a lot but worried that it won't fit your child? For example, I can see our children being named something like Emily or Rebekah, but I don't particularly like those names. I can see our kids having traditional names like these, but I don't want to use traditional names. Does that make sense? I love the name Lorelei, but I am afraid the name won't fit our daughter or go with our family's style of names. There is no one in our immediate or extended families that even has a remotely unusual name. Maybe that's why I'm struggling so much over this one. Everyone has very traditional names - Michael, Richard, Heather, Joseph, Amanda, etc. - and I know my family is going to flip when they hear "Lorelei."

Why am I struggling over this name so much if it's one of my favorites? If I heard this name on the playground, I would think..."oh that's so cute - what a great name!" Or if I met a young woman with this name, I would think "wow, that's really beautiful!" And yet I'm having a hard time imagining calling my daughter Lorelei. Why?

Your thoughts on my internal predicament???

I think it's a fine name and if you love it you should use it. It's not an uncommon name and I don't think it would be too strange with more traditional names like Michael, Heather, etc.

Well I think Lorelei is a lovely name and the nick name Michelle is a classic and will help the name fit in. We cant stick with traditional names forever can we?

Personally with all the strange names I have been hearing lately, Lorelei is not remotely unusual to me, yes it isn't very common, but I wouldn't say it was strange. I think you have come back to this name enough to say go for it, you clearly love it!

I would recommend that you use it because otherwise you may regret it later. You don't want her to be five and you imagining what it would be like if you had just had the guts to use the name you really loved. Besides, if you end up thinking that it's too different just call her by her middle name, but I think it's a very pretty name and she will love you when she's older for picking that name.

I think what you're feeling is normal. I have been totally unable to commit to a name because I keep thinking that one of the names on my list will just start feeling natural -like it was meant to be the name of my child...but it hasn't happened yet!
As for your family only being used to traditional names; I guess my response would be that someone has to break the mold sometime! LOL. Besides, I personally don't view Lorelei as all that "out there". I know a Lorelei and she comes from a fairly subdued, traditional family. It's a very pretty name. You should take the plunge. I'm thinking that it's only a matter of days once you name your daughter Lorelei that it feels like it was made for her! (I'll have to try to take this advice too and stop second guessing all of my names!)

I don't see what's so odd about the name. It's certainly not a common name (which is good) but it's not weird either. I think it DOES fit w/ traditional names. Go ahead & use it!

you are totally normal. It is so tough to pick out a name. I love that name! Go and scream it out five times to try it out. If you like it and feel happy then that is a really good sign!

Lorelei is such a beautiful name not very common at all. Lorelei is a very strong names that stand out. I would say pick the name. If you can't imagine calling her Lorelei you can always call her Lori for short. I hope this helps.
