Hey Folks,

More and more I am running across names that I love, but then when I look up the meaning, I'm flabbergasted. Who on earth would want to name their child that considering what it means? But I guess some people just don't pay attention to meaning. Here are some beautiful names with rather odd or not-so-wonderful meanings:

Cory/Corey=Hollow
Malory=Bad luck
Braeden=From the Dark Valley
Cecilia, Sheila=Blind
Alden=Of Old Age
Mary=Bitter

Anyone else out there surprised by great names with not-so-great meanings?

smaudking :o)

The Mary meaning is actually quite disputed. I wanted to use Mary (nn Molly) for our DD, but then came across Maura which I instantly loved. Maura was said to mean "dark" at a lot of baby name websites which didn't make much since because it was an Irish derivative of Mary which was said to mean "bitter". I did a bit of research and found this great website... http://www.behindthename.com/

According to this site, Mary not only means "sea of bitterness", but it also means "Rebelious" and "Wished for child". I decided to pick the 3rd option for our DD's name meaning...lol!

Meanings are interesting, but I've discovered that meanings don't matter if you create a meaningful process to pick your final name choice for your baby.

Sorry if this sounds jumbled and incoherent. Mo has finally started to find her sleeping groove, so of course now that I can sleep, I get insomnia.

I rarely look at name meanings. I can't even remember what the meaning of my daughter's or one of my granddaughter's is. Although this conversation will probably spark me to look it up.

disappointing that Mallory could mean "bad luck" - I love that name.
