Love Rafe, Gunnar, DH hates!
| Tue, 02-14-2006 - 10:24am |
My DH and I are expecting our first child in September...I am really hoping for a boy and am finding some names that I love but my DH HATES! What does everyone think of Rafe Gabriel (mn husband's first), and Gunnar Richard (mn grandpa's first)? DH thinks they sound like superhero names and can't picture calling his son them. I am so upset...what should I do? I really want something different.

Well, I'm not wild about either of your choices (Rafe is okay, but I hate the violent associations I get from Gunnar) but I definitely see your point of wanting a more unusual name. Naming a baby is a compromise so I think if your husband really HATES a name, you should drop it. But you can work toward the middle and find something you both like. Here are a list of names that are a little less common than Colin and Tyler, but less "superheroish" than Rafe and Gunnar. Maybe something on here will spark an idea:
Bryce
Garrett
Brady
Joel
Cooper
Conor
Colton
Grant
Gage
Nolan
Micah
Wesley
Elias
Miles
Oliver
Griffin
Keith
Quentin
Thaddeus (Thad/Tad)
Keaton
Riordan
Maddox
Tate
Luca
Declan
Sawyer
Reid
Kellen
Grady
Kieran
Duncan
Finian
Keenan
Gideon
Between Colin and Tyler, I'd go with Colin- Tyler's been a bit overused in the last 15 years (top 10 in the 90s). Colin's still around #84, but rising. It's a great name, but if you're looking for something a little different in North America, maybe Calum or Callum? It's super popular in Scotland, but basically unheard-of here. Along the lines of Rafe my favourite is Rory, but I know that the Gilmore Girls association makes this a unisex name here.
Calum or Rory?
good luck,
Si
