it has been hard to not have a name for this baby that is arriving in a few weeks.
problem: our last name is a little difficult because it is the same as slang for male genitals (UGH!)
our last name is "cocke". exact same pronounciation as the bad word.
i liked "lucas" but it sounds like "lick his cocke" when i say the name out loud.
do you agree?
if so, i am considering:
ethan
zachary
noah
everett
i love 'logan' but worry that it's being used for girls often now. is it?
thanks!
JEN

Awww! LOL That is a tough ln to work with. :(
I agree with you ... Lucas is less than perfect with Cocke. Not good. You might also want to avoid Noah, FWIW. It sounds a bit like "No cocke" and quite literally like an odd explanation ... "No, a cocke."
I actually just deleted a sentence about Everett seeming the least problematic, then realized that could unfortunately sound like "ever ate ..." Sigh. Kids can be cruel.
You might also like Elliott, Garrett

you are always so right! :) and so smart to notice. thank you!
i'm extremely grateful that you noticed the 'no, a cocke...' and the everett association also.
i think i may just go with 'ethan'.
please please consider 'ethan cocke' and if there are ANY possible like-sounds there.
thank you hugely!
JEN
Ethan's not bad. The worst I can think of is if it sounds like "eatin'" if said quickly by a lazy person, but it doesn't sound like that normally, KWIM? It really is tough to find a name that can't sound less-than-perfect with that ln, so in the grand scheme of things Ethan Cocke's not bad.

That IS a cool suggestion--definitely left field, but definitely cool (and Theodore, or simply Theo if you want to be a little closer to home.)
Perhaps Evan would be a safer take on Ethan?
I'm thinking keeping to one-syllable names might help you avoid unfortunate phrases because they're a little harder to verb...
I'm sorry, I don't like Lucas with Cocke because of the hard-C/K sound in both names
and especially if he ends up going by Luke a lot of the - Luke Cocke - it runs together and it's just terrible sounding together
I think you need a name with softer consonants in the first names because of Cocke having that hard C/K sound twice
Ethan Cocke sounds good, Noah Cocke sounds good - Zachary has the same problem as Lucas with hard C/K sound and the same problem with the nn Zack - Logan, yes it goes to the girls some, but I also don't like how hard the G sound is in Logan going into those hard C/Ks in Cocke
I think you also need a nice 2-syllable name that there is NOT a nickname for, because anything just one-syllable and/or one-syllable nicknames just don't sound good with it at all
here are a few others I think would work
Andrew, Brennan, (no Cs, don't even think of those), Dylan, Dustin, Damon or Damien, Evan, Gavin, Garrett, Holden, Hunter, Ian, Jared, Justin, (no Ks either), Landon, Spencer, Tanner, Trevor
good luck
Cocke is not an easy name to work with, you're right. I like both Ethan and Evan better than Lucas or Noah for you, but I think Logan might be my favorite from your list. I know you have concerns about Logan's use among girls, but in '05 Logan was almost in the top 25 for boys and still climbing. For girls, Logan ranked at 410, and it's steadily falling. Most (possibly all) of the other Logans your son might meet would be male. I think it's unlikely he would ever feel that you gave him a "girl's name."
Other names that might work with Cocke:
Sebastian
Tobias
Wesley
Rory
Sean
David
Donovan
Marcus
Samuel
Chester
Jesse
Jason
I'd stay away from any name or nn that has a prominent I, you, or is sound, such as Isaiah, Ewan, or Ezra. I'd also avoid names that sound like actions, such as Noah (Know a Cocke), Patrick (nn Pat Cocke), or Phillip. Anything that sounds like an adjective is out too: no Harry, no Gray, and no Max.
It's tough! Good luck,
Allie
Well since I've been hosting sex boards for a long time and I have guy friends who still act like they're in junior high, I think this question is just made for me.
