Lucas or Luke?

I always thought I'd use "Lucas" as it was more of a proper name and, of course, we could call the baby "Luke" all the time any way.
Now, I'm wondering if Lucas is as nice as Luke to have as an official real first name.
BUT.... I get a little nervous thinking that Luke is more of a nickname and why not give the baby the option of the Lucas also? (nothing to lose? or is Lucas not as attractive as Luke?)
The baby would be called Lucas by many if that were his real name. DH called the baby Lucas and I thought maybe I'd rather have him just be Luke.
Please weigh in!
Thanks!!

I prefer Luke! I think Luke is a real name. . . There is a Luke in the Bible :) Best Wishes!
Leslie :)
Luke is definitely a name that can be used on its own. That said, I prefer Lucas. Luke is just rather harsh-sounding to me, but it just depends on your personal style. If your DH likes Lucas better, it seems like it'd be perfect to name him Lucas and then you are free to call him Luke all the time, but DH can call him Lucas it he wants to. A win-win.
Good luck!

Thanks belle_petite for the siggy!
I prefer Lucas to Luke simply b/c I think having a given name & a different nn gives a child more options to fit into what HE likes most. My name is Samantha & I've been called Samantha, Sam & Sammie at different points in my life, which I really like b/c I have options. JMI

I LOVE Luke and find it very strong and classy, where as Lucas seems a lot weaker and not as classic. I generally like the idea of giving more name options, but in teh case of Lucas/Luke, I just prefer Luke. It definitely stands on its own.
