I was all set to use Maclain as a boy and the baby name books say it is a girls name? Would any of you think Girl when you hear it? It is very important to me to name my boy a manly name. Your thoughts are valued! Jules

I think boy. I have known one Maclain (a little boy) and I think of the actor from MASH, Maclain Stevenson I think? I wouldn't say that it is very manly, but it is not a girls name to me at all.

Maclain isn't a boys' OR a girls' name. It is a last name, and should remain so, IMO.

But, my first instinct after the initial objection, was BOY. (Even though the "lain" part might lead some to feminize the name.)

McLain is a last name, like McKenzie. Since McKenzie is now a popular girl's name, I would imagine that McLain might become one, too, especially since it's listed as one in a baby name book. You need to be OK with your son having the same name as girls in his class or school.

I guess it lends itself to the nn laney which is girl. The mac- names are too popular for my taste. but I've never heard of Maclain before.

I have a niece by the name of Mackenzie. The spelling is a bit different then the last name just as Maclain is a little different from McLain. The "a" makes a big difference in my opinion. I say go for it!! The name sounds great with her last name. I love it!! As far as it being considered a girls name, nahhhhh, I think boy all the way.
