Ok, so I've heard alot of people on here saying names sound made up, so why is that a bad thing all names were made up somewhere down the line weren't they? So what's the big deal if someone made there own name for there baby? I just don't get it I have a DD Sabryn (Say-brin) and DS Easton and those arent of the most common of names but I get compliments on them all the time. I personally like names that are different, and More power to you if you do too...lol

I just like names to have some meaning and history. I don't mind "obscure" but "created because they sound good" is just such post-modern logic that it doesn't appeal to me. Most names weren't simply created...they were derived from words with meanings. And I like that...names are part of what tie us to our culture and our history, not just an identifier. I do admit, if it doesn't even show up on the Social Security popularity charts (Easton was 359 last year, btw...) I'm even happier. (Which is why I'm thrilled that my son's name has never shown up there...or the name we've chosen for a girl...or either of the two boys' names we've set aside for next time.)

I like you brandy rich! A lot of ppl have not taken kindly to the name 'Miley', or to the spelling change I made, 'Mielee'. (which i actually do agree it will be difficult to spell, and if I use it, I won't spell it 'Mielee'.) Also, ppl thought I meant the name itself would not be trendy (which I don't care about, particularly), but what I meant was that a different spelling would be more unique for her.

I understand that tradition is very important for some ppl, and that names have a lot of meaning. I know that 'Miley' really has no meaning, except for me, the name (how I spelled it, with 'ie'), resembles the word miel which is honey in french. And I really liked that and it meant something to me.

Anyways, I dig your post!

I am a traditionalist. I love antiques and things that represent history.

I'm sure in the 1940s, everyone thought Doris and Shirley were adorable names for their sweet little girls. But now when you hear the name, you pretty much know the age of the woman you're talking about. I prefer names that span generations. I like that no one knows from my name (Catherine) whether I'm 5 or 75. I also like that I don't have to spell it several times, or when I introduce myself people don't say "Huh?"

Well, some people like names that are newly minted, some people prefer names with history, and others don't care one way or the other whether a name sounds made-up or not -- they evaluate it on other grounds, altogether.

It is all just a personal opinion, and that is what we are all here asking for... other's opinions on names. Most people didn't like most of the names I posted on my list, I think because they were also more unheard of unique names. However, I took that as a good sign that if I chose one of them, not too many others would have the same name, which is exactly what I want. Though, I guess a compromise would be for people to just say a name is not their style rather than to say negative things, or that it sounds made up... but then we wouldn't really be getting completely honest opinions, would we?

That pretty much sums it up. :)
