Is Makena too common?

My husband and I got married on Makena Beach in Maui, Hawaii and have wanted to name our daughter Makena Brynn. However, we thought we were choosing a unique name, but it seems that Makena is a pretty common name nowadays. It kinda takes the fun out of it. We wanted her name to be special. Anyone else have this problem?

Are you pronouncing it like McKenna or Makenna? Its a pretty name and i don't know of any personally, but I have heard of it a lot BUT it is only been on girls in their late teens and early twenties.

I don't think Makena is overly popular, I personally can't name one, but thats just me. I do think it's a beautiful sentiment to name her yoour wedding location. I know what you mean about picking a name thinking it isn't going to be common, then POW! Everyone knows a Makena. My DD is Jayda. We named her that 12 years ago because it was a combination of my DH & my name, plus we loved it. Now it is on the rise. While there are no Jayda's in her class there is one in 1st grade & on in Kindergarten.

I believe Helen Hunt named her daughter Makena... and for the same reason, that location in Hawaii.... I've heard it being used here and there... but another reason why I think that if it's not already common, it will become blaringly so, is b/c it seems like a variation of McKenna and other names like that... just a thought...
best wishes to you!

I've seen a lot of babies named Mckenna lately, but I've not seen one Makena. Makena would have the long e sound, right?

I have heard of people naming their daughters Makena after the beach in Hawaii. The "Mc" names like McKenna and MacKenzie are also being "creatively" spelled Makenzi and other interesting ways, so unfortunately, Makena could look like one of those awful (imo) creative spellings. How about putting it in the middle name spot? That way, her middle name will have some meaning and won't just be a "sounds good" name.
