Makenna For A Girl
| Wed, 11-15-2006 - 10:39am |
I am expecting my second daughter at the end of January. My boyfriend and I have agreed on the name Makenna, pronounced Ma-Ken-A, pretty much just how it looks. My first daughter is named Paige, which is becoming more and more common. We want a unique name for this one and I think Makenna is just that. But when I tell my all my family and freinds, they just say that it's pretty. I want to honestly know if it's a stupid name or if it really is a cute name for a little girl! Please help!
Thanks, Billie

Honestly? It's a misspelling of the masculine name/surname McKenna (meaning "son of Kenneth/Kenna/Cionnaith"), and falls into many trendy categories, including boy names for girls, (especially Mc- names, which always mean "son of ..."), random surnames, K names (the "son of" Mc- part is simply a prefix), etc. It is also VERY popular, both on its own and grouped with all the other Mc- names and misspellings (MacKenzie, MaKenzie, Makinzee, Mikenzie, Michaela, MiKayla, MaKayla, etc.), so if you're looking for something unique, this is most definitely not.
If you still like the sound of it, I'd strongly suggest going with something similar -- Michaela, Kenna (an actual female name), Megan, Morgana, Kyla, Ciara/Kiera/Kira/Kyra, Kyna, Kendra, Kerenza -- or at least spelling McKenna correctly to avoid adding misspelling to "popular-trends-this-falls-under" list, KWIM?
Also, keep in mind that what someone thinks is "a cute name for a little girl" won't be so cute when she's a 30-, 50- or 80-year-old woman. Because no matter how adorable your little is (and of course she will be! LOL), someday she is going to be a "grown-up." And no matter what her personality or profession -- whether she be a doctor, lawyer, school-teacher or police officer -- she would probably appreciate having a professional, adult name to use if she chooses. It's just nice to make sure she has that option, KWIM?

It's a cute name, but to me it's very trendy and it doesn't feel at all unique to me.
I personally like this. I know it's a surname, but in Hawaiian tradition it is spelled Makena and has a very pretty meaning. I read that it means Gift of God. Anyway, regardless of meaning, if you love it, use it.
Paige and Makenna are very pretty together and both will grow with your children into adulthood. PP said that cute names on a girl don't necessarily do that. I tend to agree. i.e. Barbie. Bambi, etc. Do this test, close your eyes and picture her at those ages 20's, 30's 40's and so on. If you still see her as Makenna, you're good. :) Another test I do, is to call her Auntie ---, Dr.---, Mrs.----, Grandma---, just to get a feel for a name. If I'm pleased with all the results, it's a keeper.

You know what?
Makenna is nice, but certainly pretty popular. I do like how it sounds with Paige though. Other ideas:

Well personally I LOVE the name Makenna, That is one of our daughters name, and I can tell you ( much like another poster) I have not yet met another Makenna and every time someone hears her name, we always get comments on how pretty it is. I know some have posted that it is trendy, but maybe its just certain regions, because again we have not heard it other than our little Makenna ( who we also call Kenna).
I say if you love it ...use it!!!
and it does sound Great with Paige
Good luck with your decision
