Is making up a name a bad idea?

Well, since we were 100% on the boys name I guess fate decided to give us a boy in 2002. But, as we don't have any names this time fate has decided to complete my dreams & give me a girl.
Dh & I still argue over a girls name (it's now been over 10 yrs). I'm starting to fall back onto the name I came up with so many years ago. When I had made this up I liked the name Erin, dh liked the name Heather Ann. I love the NAME Heather, but do not have positive associations with Heather's in my life. And the name Ann is just too blunt for me. But I came up with the name ....
Eireanna
It's a mix of Erin, but more of a twist on the spelling for Eire (Ireland) and then softened up the name Ann to Anna.
I believe the correct spelling for this name is Arianna & I think it might be Greek. We want a name that goes with McCracken & also rings well with her big brother's of Liam Connor.
Does this name seem to hard to have? Especially in the elementary years?
Reading this name, how would you think it is pronounced?
We have never really discussed a middle name, but dh's grandfather's name was Lynn. He was very important in my dh's life so I was thinking....
Eireanna Lyn McCracken

There is another name...Eirene..that is similar. It means peace and is where the name Irene comes from. Maybe you would like that?
Anyway, I do think it might be a bit much for a kid to learn to spell and for people to learn to pronounce.
I'll be interested to see what others think!

I think Arianna has such a unique and exotic sound to it, it would go with any nationality of name. :) I think it would sound great with Liam Conner.
hth!

Hi, Bonnie! CONGRATULATIONS on the baby girl!
I was thinking of the spelling Eire~anna since in my head I hear Eire as AIR-E, but I don't know why. Both Erin & Eringobraugh are AIR-un. So it makes sense Eire is AIR-uh.
But this makes the name all that much more difficult to work with & making me think I need to follow a more traditional route.
Did I ever tell you Aislinn was one of my picks? I have not yet removed it from our list even though he says no. Aine is agreeable for a middle name if we can get a good first name to go with it.
Kerri Lyn is one I'm thinking about since dh's family is from County Kerry, plus his mother's maiden name is Cary.
I've tried looking up Scottish girl names since I believe McCracken actually originated in Scottland & moved to Ireland very early. Plus my name is Scottish, so it sort of makes sense both girls have Scottish names while the boys have Irish??? But there seem to be less Scottish female names than Irish!
I just wish something would just grab me!

I would have no initial clue how to pronounce it the way you wrote it.
I think it depends on the name being "made up", lol. To me, Eireanna doesn't look too made up....I mean, Anna is a bona fide name, and "-anna" is at the end of a lot of names. The "Eir-" part does make it look Irish, but the "-anna" part makes it look like the name of a Romantic language. I do think that with both the "e" and the "i", it might seem a little awkward...maybe Erianna?
I have "made up" a name myself, lol...I had a great aunt named Alice, and from the stories I've heard, she was glamorous, spunky, intuitive, and just wonderful. I would love to name a daughter after her, but I go for more "feminissima" names...so I thought up: Alysanna. LOL, it was kind of hard to continue using the "i" and "c" from Alice and then add "-anna" at the end-- Alicanna: that would most likely be pronounced: Al-ih-CAN-ah, lol. So I changed it around a bit. I might really use Alysanna for a daughter.
I think the problem with "making up" names is when the name just seems too bizarre...like Orkanjensua or Mafibble.
The other type of "made up" name that I can't stand is when people take words and use them as names...some can transfer over, others can't. I mean, a daughter named Cabinet just doesn't make it, lol.
Another poster recently brought out a good point--ALL names, at some point, were "made up". I know for myself, I typically like names that have already been established as names. Not that I like common names, they can be very obscure, but I want to know that they have been recognized as names in the past.
Well, best of luck to you! I think the name you "made up" is lovely! :-)

I would pronounce Eireanna: ire-anna, if that makes sense.
I think I would prefer Erinanna Lyn. It seems easier to pronounce, and is still very unique and pretty. Or you could break it up as Eire Anna Lyn or Erin Anna Lyn. Or even Eire/Erin Annalyn.
