I recently posted a poll with some of favorite boys names and one that got some grief was Max. Several people accused this name of being trendy - is it really??? I try to stay pretty up on the trends and maybe this is one I have missed. Granted this name isn't obscure, but it has stayed around 150-200 on the SSA list for the past 20yrs. I think that anything not in the top 100 is pretty great for a boys name. Is it because when you combine Max with Maxwell there are actually many more? I just love short, but substantial names and I thought Max was one of them. Do Iris and Max sound good together - or I am missing something?

I don't find Max trendy in the least, definitely a classic. However, it is much more common than Iris. (Maxwell). If it were short for Maxim, or something along those lines, I think it would go better with Iris.

Max comes across as trendy/common simply because it is such a popular "nn name," if you KWIM. While it's true that as a given name it's 165, when you combine it with some of the other names Max is used as a nn for -- Maxwell, Maxim(o), Maximus, Maximil(l)ian, Maddox -- it would be right around 50, up there with Mason, Jackson, Connor, Aiden/Jayden (though those are more popular when combined with their proper spellings and other misspellings), Cameron, Hunter, Owen, etc.

Also, I think the nn name aspect mentioned above is a huge part of the trendiness. In other words, while the name itself might not seem trendy to you, it's part of a larger trend involving Jack, Sam and Ben, among others, and all the formal names those can be nns for. People just seem to be gravitating toward those types of names at the moment, much like Elle, Maddy or Addie for girls, so that's probably where the trendy feeling comes from.

HTH ;)

I think Max, "just" Max, and Iris are fantastic together! Sure, Max is popular, but this is one of those cases where I'd advocate ignoring that, just because the sib set is so awesome.

thanks for the insight - I hadn't thought about all of the other Max names. I still like this name enough to look pasts its faults. Max is one of the few boy names my family and friends aprove of - that should have been my first warning!

Hi there.

I really love Max (as a nn or on its own), and no it is certainly not trendy. It's a bit common for little ones, but that's completly different than trendy. It's a classic, & grows up well.

I love it w/Iris. They both have a fun & spunky old fashioned feel. Perfect.

Hope this helps!

Max isn't a trendy name just because it is popular. Trendy to me is a name that rises in popularity and can be dated to a particular period. While Max is more popular now I know Max's of all ages. I have a Max that was named in 2002 and it jumped the charts here in Australia that year but I am still yet to meet one his age. Iris and Max are wonderful for siblings IMO.

Of course I am partial to Max :)
