MEAN, Rude grandparents...HELP!

Well, we received some really bad feedback from both sets of grandparents this holiday weekend when we revealed our choices of names for our first son, with the preference of Gabriel (Gabe). The others were Gage and Chandler. One grandmother keeps pronouncing it is Gabrielle, and when corrected, said she would have to remember "Gay...Gabe...Gabriel..." and stated "how could you do that to him?" and the other said it was such a feminine name...and the grandfathers think the nn will be Gabby instead of Gabe. I cried all weekend and now I am seeking everyone's input to see if we are "missing" something...I thought this was a fairly normal, likable name that was "safe" and would not turn anyone off too much even if it was not their style...

DESPERATELY SEEKING YOUR OPINIONS!!!

Do you like the name Gabriel, are you neutral or do you absolutely detest it?

The only way I had heard it pronounced was Jil li an, the different name sites that I had visited shows it as a three syllable name.

Please don't let family members ruin what you have chosen. For this reason along with others my Husband and I decided to not tell ANYONE what we are thinking of for baby names. This lets us decide what we like best and to name the baby when we meet them without having mean and rude comments from family members.
Keep your chin up and good luck!~

Our son is Benjamin, and we always shortened it to Ben. His dad's parents ALWAYS called him Benny, even though we hated it and asked them not to. When he was about 10, he put a stop to it himself, by just telling them he hated being called Benny--they could just stop at Ben---. Eventually, they stopped and now they call him either Ben or Benjamin.

I love the name Gabriel. It is my nephew's name though, so I am partial. I liked it when they picked it, too, though. They always call him Gabe, sometimes it somehow becomes Gabey Baby, but not very much anymore. (He is four now)
