I opted for the spelling Mikayla because I like the nickname kayla and I felt Michaela looked too much like Michael. Do you think a nickname could still be kayla from the Michaela spelling and do you think people would know how to pronounce Michaela the proper way from this spelling??

I would do Mikayla. Especially if you want to have Kayla for a nn. Why not just name her Kayle though?

Michaela is an incredibly popular name and this is the traditional spelling so I 'm sure that most people will know how to pronounce it. I've never met anyone who doesn't. I don't think it would be a problem to use the nn Kayla at all. I actually think that is a good idea because I think Michaela is a name that ages much better than Mikayla or Kayla, so she could use Kayla as a nn and Michaela for more formal purposes when she is an adult.

Hi again,

Michaela is very well-known as a name, I don't think you'll have any problems with pronounciation (it really doesn't matter what the name is, at some point someone's going to pronounce it incorrectly- my SIL is Ellen Jones, can't get any plainer than that...and yet she was telling us that she was paged at work as "Eye-len John-ess"- and by someone whose first language is english, lol). I agree w/ pp that Kayla is still just fine as a nn :)

I think it depends if your daughter is being named in honor of someone named Michael.

I have a Daughter named Mackenzie and am currently trying for another, so My "Girl" name I have picked out is Mackayla. With the NN Kayla. I like it because it is spelled different than all the other Michaela's and Mikayla's. And it goes with my daughter's name. Kenzie and Kayla! Good Luck!

I like Michaela much better because that is the traditional spelling and I think it's much more timeless. THe Mikayla spelling may date the name in the future.

A NN doesn't have to be taken directly from the spelling of the formal name. My name is Michelle and my NN is Shelley, even though Michelle doesn't have a S. The same goes for Billy/William, Dick/Richard, etc.

I like Michaela better, I think it looks more appealing. Mikayla is okay. The name just really isn't my style at all, no matter what spelling. I prefer Mckayla over Mikayla though. I don't like the nn Kayla for Mikayla/Michaela. I like Kayl, and I know a Mckayla who uses Mckayl as the nn.

I have a very strong preference for Michaela. As common as McKayla/Mikayla/Mikaela, etc., are, they still look made-up and a little flimsy to me. If you're looking for a less common but still pronouncable spelling, these days the traditional Michaela is probably the best bet. I study names and read hundreds of birth announcements, and I hardly ever come across it that way. The first Kayla I ever knew, who would be 26 now, was actually Caela, which is a lot closer to Michaela in spelling (and the traditional Spanish spelling is Micaela, so that might be a compromise). That Caela is actually the reason I'm not fond of the name, but if you're set on it, I'd definitely go with Michaela (or Micaela) no matter how you want to spell Kayla as a nickname. It's far more elegant, less dated (which is not to say that Mikayla is passé now, but it probably will be in a few years), and gives your daughter a choice later on.

I like the name, and it even made my girl names list. But I had the spelling of Makayla because I think it looks more feminine than the other ways of spelling the name.
