Family middle names? I think it's nice but not a must. Annelise's middle name was my grandmother's. I don't know if we'll be able to come up with another family related girl name that we like.

Middle names as first names? Both DH and I use our middle names as first names. He shares his first name with his father so he uses his middle name. He went through a most of public school using his first name but after HS went back to his mn. (His name is Kevin Brice.) I'm Catherine Vista for a couple of reasons. It sounds better than Vista Catherine.

I'm definitely using middle names, and I put as much thought into middle names as I do into first names.

I don't think middle names SHOULD be family names, but it's nice if they are (or at least if they have special meaning). I'm considering using Brady, a family name,

Just for fun.....

What are your favorite mn's? Michael and James for boys, Violet and Marie for girls

Should they be family names? these are all family names

Will the child use mn as a fn? No Way

Will you give your child a mn? Yes, ds's mn is Layne because that is dhs mn, and our second will have one of the mn's above.

My favorite non-family middle names right now are Simone and Jane for girls, Thomas for boys.

My favorite family middle names are Frances, Alice, Joy, and May for girls; Paul, Scott, John, and Michael for boys.

We have chosen to use family names for our DDs' middle names, but I don't think it's necessary for every family. If we didn't have any names we liked for our first DD, we wouldn't have done it. My DH and I don't have family names for our middle names (although his first name is a family name).

My DH uses his mn as his fn b/c his name had a better flow that way, but his mom liked the mn better as a given name. We do not have any intentions of doing that for our children, but I don't think it's a terrible thing.

Our children will all have at least one middle name.

What are your favorite mn's? girls: Rose and Sofia, boys: Alexander and Erik

Should they be family names? they don't have to, but it's nice if they are.

Will the child use mn as a fn? no, but it will use both the first name and the middle name almost all the time.

Will you give your child a mn? yes. I myself only have one name, and I can't count all the times I wished I had more than that. And by having more name the child can chose which name they want to use.
