I wouldnt get upset if MIL did not like the name. She will love it once baby is here and wont be able to imagine him with any other name.

Owen and Noah are my favorites from your list!

Good Luck

I like all of the names you have picked out. My personal favorites would be Nathan and Noah, but your son's name should be YOUR personal favorite - not ours or your MIL's. I wouldn't worry about your MIL's reaction. I think it would be a shame not to use a name you love just because this one kid who's a little annoying has the same name. Unless he's a relative or is around ALL the time, it really shouldn't matter that much - besides he may change or he may move.

My advice is to thank her for her input, then ignore it and let it be. Don't try to convince her that it's great - just name your son what you want and let HIM win her over!

Good luck!

I think it would bother me if I knew upfront that a family member didn't like a name ... not that I'd CARE that they didn't like it but that I'd question the name itself as being a good one or not, as I would question the name if ANYONE told me they didn't like it.

That said, I do like Austin. I also like Noah, Owen, & Nathan! Not so crazy about Griffin but it's not bad either!!

Hmm, not much help! Those are some nice names!

That is the exact reason why I use this board as my "opinion place" instead of gong to close family or friends. We have always chosen to NOT discuss names with either side of the family--they will learn to love the baby and his/her name after he is born, no matter what he/she is named. I love the way Collin, Gavin, and Austin sound! I like every name on your list, so I don't think you can lose either way you go. My favorite would have to be Owen. Its a name that has been growing on me lately!

I'm in the minority here. My MIL died before my children were born, but I never would have chosen a name she didn't like. There are two reasons for that. The first is that I think I respected her too much to choose a name that she stated she didn't like. The second, and more important reason, is that she had the ability to make my life hell and I would never have given her one more reason to be upset with me.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Like some others mentioned, once he's born it will be "his" name, and they won't really have many negative comments about it. If it helps, when I mentioned the two or three names we were considering for our second daughter, I think my younger brother was the only one in our families who liked the one we ended up choosing. Now they all love it and think it fits her perfectly.

If you're still undecided (as it seems you do still have a list lol), you could try posting a poll and see what comes out on top. :) Of those you listed, I think Nathan and Owen go best with your other boys' names. Austin and Noah don't seem to have the same "feel," and Griffin seems a little too rhymey with Gavin (two-syllable names starting with G and ending in N). HTH!

Deep down you want to say it doesn't bother you, but it would anyone. My MIL didn't like either of my 2 girls names - and who knows if they ever grew on her. But my girls have grown into their names, which is what's important. Don't worry, do what you want if you can...

Owen and Griffin are at the top of my favorite list for my 3rd, on his way in April. I love, love, love Griffin!!! Austin was on our list too but I've since ruled it out. I dunno why, I guess I just liked the other names better. Plus, we lived in Texas for a long time and just wasn't sure I could name it after the city (although Austin is an awesome town!).

We definitely have similar tastes in names, let me know what you decide!
