MN Ideas for Julia
| Fri, 03-24-2006 - 11:49am |
I posted here recently saying that I had narrowed my favorite name list down to two - LORELEI and JULIA. I have plenty of ideas for middle names for Lorelei - in fact too many it seems. However, I could really use some suggestions for Julia. Many of them are just repeats of those I am considering using for Lorelei. I'm not particularly ecstatic about any of them, though.
The only names I have come up with so far are the following:
Julia Claire Thomas
Julia Michelle Thomas (my mn and also using as an option for Lorelei)
Julia Mae (my grandmother's mn and also using as an option for Lorelei).
Julia Rose Thomas (also using as an option for Lorelei)
I'd appreciate your ideas! I am very much open to suggestions! Thanks!

Though you didn't ask, I'd like to add my two cents about Julia vs. Lorelei...
Julia is soaring in popularity in certain regions of the country and is catching on everywhere. It's already wildly popular in Europe (which tends to set the pace for US). It is a beautiful name, that's why of course.
However, Lorelei is stop-in-your-tracks beautiful as well! While it is being used more now than in the past, it has a long, long, long way to go before it even approaches Julia's popularity.
Just food for thought...
IF I were to do Julia- I would be tempted with a very different mn to set it apart-
The expected will be Julia Faith, Claire, Rose, Brooke, Danielle, Marie, etc.
I DO like your idea of family mn!!! Kids like to be linked to someone...
Julia Michelle or Mae is very pretty, in that respect. I would probably choose one of those just for family value...
But if not- I'd go VERY different from the expected middle names-
Julia Simone Thomas
Julia Penelope Thomas
Julia Helen Thomas
Julia Frances Thomas
Julia Vivian Thomas
Julia Caroline Thomas
Julia Marjorie Thomas
Julia Maureen Thomas
Julia Camille Thomas
Julia Marilyn Thomas
Julia Evelyn Thomas
Julia Bethany Thomas
Julia Valerie Thomas
Lots of luck, Ginger

Thanks for your input! I am still debating between Julia and Lorelei. I realize Julia is beginning to soar and will probably reach the top 10 pretty soon. Of course, it's a beautiful name, and I like it a lot. My husband also loves Emily but popularity was one of the reasons I didn't consider it. I didn't want her to be one of a dozen Emilys in her class. I've also considered Juliana, but I'm just not sure if I like it as much as Julia or Lorelei.
Do you think Lorelei is too big of a name for a little girl or is it just one of those that she'll grow into? I have a hard time picturing a 2 year old named Lorelei, and I envision it more on a young woman. Would you use a nickname, or is Lorelei too pretty to shorten? What nicknames would you suggest, if any?
I just replied to your post above, but I'll repeat it here ... despite how it looks "on paper," I've yet to meet a single little girl named Julia! I do, however, personally know at least half a dozen little Julianas (all under the age of 8 or so), so to me this one actually seems MORE popular (and definitely not as classic as Julia). So out of those two I definitely prefer Julia! ;)
Of your original two, I really like both Julia and Lorelei (and for what it's worth, I DO picture an adorable little girl when I hear the name Lorelei, although I'm sure it ages quite well, so I wouldn't worry about that). Also, if you're worried about popularity, I don't think you'd run into many other little Loreleis (despite how much many on here seem to like it). ;) It's still pretty uncommon, I would think. And while it does have a beautiful sound, I think a good nn would be perfectly acceptable. Of course you could use Rory, but then there's also Leila, Lila, Lori, Lola, etc. You can pretty much use whatever seems the best "fit" in this situation.
HTH :)

Kelli,
I think I'm pretty much set on either Lorelei Mae or Julia Lynn (of course knowing me, this could always change). I think I'll keep both of them and then decide when it's time. The way I look at it, I can always use the other name later on. It's not as though I have to discard it.
Thanks for the nn suggestions. I really like Leila/Lila, and I hadn't thought of it before you mentioned it. I also like Lola a lot too. Of course Lorelei is such a beautiful name that it almost seems wrong to shorten it. :)
I'm quite surprised that I haven't met any little Loreleis yet. I'm sure some exist, especially with the popularity of the "Gilmore Girls", but I haven't actually know anyone to use this name. Yet, it seems to be very popular on these boards. It's such a beautiful name, but it's still familar enough that it's not too strangely exotic. I wonder if it's more of a geographical thing. Perhaps southerners think it's too "snooty." LOL
I think keeping both Lorelei Mae and Julia Lynn (btw, these are the two I voted for in the poll LOL) and seeing which fits her best is a great idea. And you're right about not having to abandon whichever you don't choose ... we actually considered Abigail when naming Devanie, but I knew I'd regret it more if I didn't use the less-common name (since Abigail's apparently so popular now), but here we are just a year later and we've gotten our Abigail as well. ;)
Leila/Lila and Lola were my favorite nn possibilities for Lorelei too. ;) I agree you'll probably use her full name much of the time (it is lovely!), but it does make sense to have a short version to use since it is a longer name. We swore we'd never shorten Devanie to Dev or Devie, but sometimes those three syllables just take too long (say, when she's about to use the entertainment center as a step ladder ROFL ... DEV! is inevitably what comes out).
I definitely agree Lorelei is familiar enough/not too exotic (in the back of my mind I always make the Germanic connection, but even knowing that it doesn't strike me as a name that would ONLY work within a certain culture, KWIM?). Not sure about the geographical thing, but if it helps I live about an hour from Philadelphia and within an hour or two of NY (so I would think it would potentially be quite popular around here, but I have yet to meet one). ;)
