mommyagain - question for you!

Hey! I've got another question for you about the name Eden. I know we've discussed the "trendiness" of it especially if used with the wrong sib names. In one of your last comments, you said that on it's own, it seems trendy and a bit juvenille but could work with the right sib names. Obviously, if we have a daughter she's not always going to be grouped with her siblings. Who knows, she may not even have siblings. At some point, she'll grow up and just be Eden with no family names attached to her. I mean, I don't go around and introduce myself as "I'm so-and-so, sister to so-and-so." KWIM? Is she going to run into the same problem then of having just another trendy, juvenille name as she grows up or is it a name that could grow well with her?

I'd appreciate your thoughts!

It's funny you should mention that, because I had those exact thoughts when I commented on Eden in your last thread. ;)

I'm not sure how to phrase this without completely rambling, but here goes.

Eden itself does have that trendy, juvenile feel you mentioned -- and that's not to say every parent that picks it IS either of those things -- but it is the association many have when they first hear of a child with that name.

That impression can be contextual, however. If, for instance, I knew the parents were very religious and had other children named Keziah and Talitha, little Eden would fit right in. In fact, it would seem a more substantial choice than some other admittedly cutesy religious theme sib sets I've heard (Faith, Hope and Charity, for example). Or in your case, say you were to have a Lorelei and then a Christian, followed by another little girl. Eden would tie them together perfectly (as both a nature/mythological type name like Lorelei and, well, Christian name like Christian). ;)

Obviously even these Edens wouldn't always be referenced along with their sibs, so at some point someone probably will think it trendy/juvenile, but

Sorry for the delayed response back! It's just been one of those weeks! Thanks for the comments as always. :) You really are a big help.

You touched on this in your PP, but one of the reasons I like the names Eden and Christian are because of their Biblical reference. I don't care for the traditional Biblical names that our circle of friends use. Not that there's anything wrong with them, I'm just tired of hearing the same names over and over again (example: Jacob, Caleb, Hannah, and Sarah). I want something that ties in our religious heritage but that stands out at the same time. I feel like Eden does that and to a lesser extent Christian (although this seems to a popular name in general).

All that being said, would you consider Eden and Christian too "cutesy" together as a sib set? Would it be better to use one or the other but not both?

I don't think Eden and Christian are necessarily too much together, but mainly because Christian seems to see a lot of general usage (not necessarily for its religious connotation). FWIW, I always think that odd, but it could help you in this case. ;)

Together, they do throw out more of a "Bible-beater" vibe -- only using that term because someone else (you?) did recently, and I can't think of a better word at the moment LOL -- where Christian and Lorelei just seem crisp and have a bit of a German feel, Christian and Eden leave no question as to the reasons the parents chose the names, KWIM? Still not as bad as sibs named Adam and Eve or Mary and Joseph or something, though. And I definitely do like the fact that you want to use something with a Biblical association but still branch out from the usual Jacob, Hannah, etc. You should do a post asking for less-common Biblical/Christian names and see if anything strikes you ... I'll bet you'd get a ton of options you wouldn't even have thought of. Just a thought!

I know I haven't given you a straight answer here. LOL Basically, I'd be inclined to use one or the other, because it probably would be too cutesy for me, but on the other hand I might be biased, because I do get a completely different feel from Christian and Lorelei vs. Christian and Eden (and the Lorelei sib set just seems so much classier and well-thought-out, so that may be tainting it for me).

Hope that somehow helps. ;)

I think Eden is nice, and I don't think she would outgrow it.

I think this baby naming thing is going to be the death of me! LOL I keep wavering between the names Eden, Lorelei and Julia.

I think the reason I don't like Eden with Christian as a sib set is that they sound so similar. The Biblical references don't bother me, but they have the same number of syllables and both end in the "en" sound. They are just so close, IMO.

I think in my heart, I've narrowed it down to Lorelei and Julia, which is funny because those are the two names I had it narrowed down to a very long time ago! For some reason, I just can't completely let go of Eden, though. AHHHHHH...... :)

They sounded too similar to me as well, but I didn't think you wanted input on that. ;) Of course, that's coming from someone that worried about Kaitlyn and Ewan or Devanie and Harvey sounding too close. LOL

I do prefer Lorelei or Julia for you, FWIW. Love both of them actually. I think either would be wonderful, and if you find yourself still drawn to Eden but worried about the perception you could always use it as a mn and avoid that entirely (I know you've considered this in the past, and really I wouldn't be too concerned about how well it sounds if it allows you to use two names you love, KWIM?).

I didn't get to reply to your mn post yet, but Mae also works with either, if you really want to use a family name, or you could use a variation like Maeve for Mae, Eve for Evelyn (Evelyn seemed a bit L-heavy with either fn) or Jane for Jeanette. Lorelei Jane is especially lovely, and I like how the simpler mn balances out Lorelei, especially since I know you were concerned about it sounding more "exotic."

Just some thoughts. ;)

Take care.

I've been meaning to mention this (keep forgetting when I'm on here LOL), but since I believe your dh didn't care for Eve with Lorelei or Julia, have you considered Maeve in honor of BOTH Mae and Evelyn. It's quite literally Mae+Eve, and I know it's been suggested by me and at least one or two others (still not sure how you feel about it though

Kelli, thanks for the suggestion. That's an interesting idea - I hadn't thought of the combination of Mae and Eve. How do you pronounce Maeve - is it just like it looks?
