The Name Argument!

I've just hopped over from the August EC. DH and I are expecting baby numero uno during this summer. We will find out later this week what the sex of baby is (about time since I'll be 26 weeks on Friday!) but before then we've been discussing name ideas. Our huge point of contention was that he wants to name a boy after his brother and grandfather who is deceased, John. I abhor the name John because it is *so* boring to me and over-used. We finally decided that it could stay as the middle name, but now everyone in his family is insisting that no matter what baby's first name is, they will call the baby John! UGH! I can't take away the name John from my husband because it means a lot to him, but I only want it formally in the name and not for usage per say. Anyway, I am at a loss for a first name. I'm looking for a romance novel sounding name to be completely honest...nothing ending in -ayden sounds since that is also something I am tired of hearing.

For a girl I am coming across some great ideas! Our original idea was Cordelia Zoe, but the name soured on me when we began to argue so vociferously over the "John" issue. With that in mind I saw that someone listed off names ending in -ella and I immediately was struck by Sophiabella. I want to do a double name for a girl because it is kind of a tradition in my family now. I am Julianne, my cousin is Lou Ellen and her daughter is Eleanor Gayle. I've also thought of combining my mother's middle name and my MIL's middle name for Kayellen or Kaye Ellen (not sure how I like it spelled best). I really love Sophiabella though, but hubby is not *as* keen on it since apparently there is a porn star out there named Bella Donna or something? Working with him is like trying to move a stick out of dried up southern clay! lol I don't know, what do you all think? I just realized while typing this that there are apparently a lot of 'Elen's in my family so I don't know if Kaye Ellen is such a great idea, but they don't live around here. I guess I would have to stick with my hubby's original choice of Zoe as a middle name for a girl too, even though I think it's a little too short and spunky for my tastes.

Ideas???

Cordelia is just stunning, and I like the idea of using another form of John, which others already suggested.

hello!! it seems coming up with names that our hubbys agree on is a common problem on this board-lol. most of the names i come up with my hubby either has a relative named it or just doesnt like it...and most of the names he comes up with are plain and not my style either. its a miracle we agreed on our 2 girls names-violet rose and isabelle grace(well, his dad loved violet and his mom loved isabelle so i at least had them in my corner helping me with their son-lol)anyway, im not loving sophiabella-too much a with it in the middle and at the end-but i do like sophiebella. i also like cordelia too...what about:
callista
helena(to give honor to the ellens in your family)
makayla(for the kay)
mckenna(again the k)
elaine or elana
the last one might be a good middle name-elanakay...zoe-ellen might be a good mame choice too...
for the boy-my sister "had" to use john if her baby wasa boy cuz its tradition-she had john alexander and john paul picked out-but her baby ended up a girl-so she didnt have to worry about it...for a first name, what about:
trenton
rochester
chester
phillip
carter
evan
walker
holdon
colton
chanlder
clayton
or
clifton.
and if anyone calls him john, just tell them that his name is...that youd perfer they call him that-its less confusing that way...take care!!

Wow! Thank you all for such amazing input! DH is definitely not cool with any forms of John other than John, so the mn will have to be John just like that if it's a boy. John will not be a fn because I personally dislike it so much. As for a fn for a boy, I really liked Rafael nn Rafe but hubby said NO. He is incredibly hard to work with :'( The type of romance novel names I tend to like are the ones you find in the period pieces. I am a huge fan of the historic ones set in the UK... in fact maybe I should go to the library and thumb through some. I'm super picky with boy names and wasn't really stunned by any of the other ones suggested, but thank you guys so much for putting them out there.

I'm also so surprised by people liking Cordelia! I loved it when I picked it out and even for months later, but the name argument has rendered it unusable to me with this baby--possibly later. After we chose it we found out it was a family name somewhere down the line, but most of our family names on either side are not attractive *at all*. I can't use Anabelle because it is dh's cousin's kids name. She just had her in December. I understand what everyone says about Sophiabella. Maybe if I made it Sophia Bella with a space for the first name and then mn last name does that make it less alphabet soup looking? Man decisions, decisions!

Those are my favourite romance novels, too. My mom has tons, I might go through some later and see if I can find any that seem to be the style you're looking for. Maybe you can get a little leeway with your dh: since he is so adamant about using the name John, even though you don't like it, you get to use a name you love, even if he's not as crazy about it. Once the baby is born, chances are he'll love the child so much, the name might grow on him. If not, he could use always use a nn he likes better.

Maybe a double first name with John as part of it? I'm not saying that Joseph would work for you because it's traditional, but just as an example of someone with a double first name using John, I know of a John Joseph, who is called by both first names and sometimes called JJ. If you find a name that you love, perhaps you could combine it with John for a double name, and then he wouldn't be too confused when all his relatives on your husband's side call him John. (I hate to say it, but unless your husband lays down the law to his family, there's a decent chance they will go ahead and call him John; I've seen stuff like this happen, and it's unfair. Hopefully, he will support you if you want your baby called something other than John. Or perhaps you won't see his family so often that it would be a problem?) Good luck!
