Name for a Girl

My choice for baby name (if we have a girl) was always Veronica Leigh: my father (Ronald) will have a namesake of sorts (he has all granddaughters - no grandsons), and my mom's middle name is Lee. I change the spelling because I thought it was prettier.

Here are the downsides:
my husband thinks it sounds like a stripper's name. He's ok with Veronica, just not the two names together.

My husband's obnoxious sis-in-law just became a grandmother, and the baby's name is Ashleigh Renee'. She will, without a doubt, run around & tell everyone we chose 'Leigh' because of her grandaughter. This is not speculation -- I know this woman & I guarantee she will somehow find a way to insinuate that she had a hand it this.

I've considered changing it to Veronica Jean (my husband's late mother's name), but he thinks there are too many of them (my stepdaughter is Victoria Jean, his brother's daughter is Maddigan Jean).

I'm still holding on to 'Leigh', but I might go back to basic 'Lee'. Any thoughts?

If you *know* this woman will do that then I would go with Veronica Lee (lovely and there are so many Leigh's about) and actually do one of those new style announcements that says it clear:

'Introducing Veronica Lee

named for her grandpa Ronald and grandma ____ Lee

born ____'

Some people put in the meaning or some other info but that's the basics and it runs that woman off the side of her chosen road ;o)

Over here Leigh is a bit on the twee side, like what we call 'mock tudor'.

I agree with devonelisa about Veronica Lee and the announcement. Frankly, I think that's a very meaningful addition to the announcement - icky sis-in-law or not. While Leigh may look prettier, since Veronica is somewhat fancy itself, I like the plainer, but no less nice Lee with it, especially since that was your mother's actual name.

As an alternative to Jean, if you or your husband think there are too many of those, how about Jane instead?

I can't for the life of me figure out what makes your husband think Veronica and Leigh together sound like a stripper

I think you are way overthinking this since it's a middle name. I think the Leigh spelling is fine by itself - I absolutely hate this idea of people ending other names with eigh like Ashleigh, Kayleigh etc. it's an unnecessary use of letters in those cases, but the name Leigh has been around for a while and was made to look like the feminine form of Lee

if the sister-in-law or her mother accuses you of stealing the Leigh out of Ashleigh, tell them they have too much time on their hands and to find a hobby

good luck

The birth of your daughter is too happy a time to let others ruin it.

I actually did the birth announcement plain and had an insert printed that told who the babies were named for.

I prefer Veronica Lee. It's more obvious who she's named for.

I do not think it's stripperish. However, I think it's important to recognize to your husband's opinion. If he's like me, once he gets an idea in his head, that's just the way it is.

I was a huge fan of Sasha. Pictured a French or Russian schoolgirl in a plaid uniform who owned a poodle!?!? Husband ditched immediately proclaiming it stripper heaven! (?)

What is your mom's other name? Some variation of it may solve all your problems.
I also like the suggestion of Jane.

Other suggestions-

Gena Veronica or Jenna Veronica.

Best wishes, Ginger

Thanks for the input == I'm betting I'm going to be able to convince him to let me have the name I want...he's a pushover like that.

As for the middle name spelling, i'm most likely going to return to the original 'Lee'. I did think about 'Lea', but who knows....

Now if only he'd think up a boy name that I like!!

Thanks again!!

i like the name veronica leigh-but i can see your point about switching the middle name spelling cuz of your hubbys sis-in-law. what about spelling it lei instead? then its different from lee and also different from ashleigh. you could also spell it ley if you wanted...again different from lee, but also different from leigh. if you truly like the name, then i would use it. and i disagree with your hubby-it does not sound like a strippers name-bambi or candi-those sound like strippers names, not veronica lee...good luck!
