Name heard in Target

I was at Target on Saturday and heard a mother talking to a baby boy. His name was "Bruce." When I was growing up (60s and 70s) Bruce was a common name but I haven't heard it in a while. For some reason I have always considered it a "weak" name. I know all about Robert the Bruce, and I still don't like the name - don't know why though.

I don't like Bruce either...reminds me of the 1970's and Bruce Jenner. Bryce is just as bad.

Just need to jump in here-
Karla, I grew up with a family with the same names! (Bruce, Brian, Brett, Brad, then there was Brooks, and the girls, Kelly and ummm...I can't think of the other.) It couldn't have been the same family, could it??? :)

In the seventies and eighties, Bruce was the stereotypical "gay" name, as ridiculous as that seems. It seemed like anytime a character who might be gay appeared on a sitcom his name was almost always Bruce. When the Incredible Hulk comic book was made into a TV show, the network executives insisted the main character's name be switched from Bruce Banner to David Banner for this reason.

The name Bruce does seem to be making a comeback. It's not a favorite of mine, but it is good to see a name shake off a silly bigoted connotation.

Funny that you all see Bruce as a "weak" name and that it even had a gay connotation. I actually see Bruce as a great name for the strong, silent type. The three guys that I know named Bruce are in their 30s now and are all big, strong, pretty nice-looking guys with friendly, fun, and somewhat quiet personalities.

I have a hard time picturing Bruce on a baby, but I love it on a grown man. :-)
