Name Jack's Brother!

We just found out that we are having boy #2. I either sulking that there are no pink dresses in my future or drawing a total blank on names. I cant find a single name that I am drawn to. We have an Irish-sounding last name. Our son's name is Jack- we liked that it was strong, athletic, simple, all american, irish (ironic, considering my last comment), and also happened to be a family name. So I need to name this next boy and I want something in that vein and something that would match a Jack. Couple names I pulled out but Im not sold on by ANY means:

-Alexander (preppy but nice, little concerned my cousin just named his son that)
-Owen (no idea where I am going with this one, have not clear with DH)
-Cole (strong, irish, but a little cold sounding I think)
-Nathan (Nate, simple, Dh not thrilled)
-Walker (Saw it in the newspaper today- told you I was sulkly)
-Drew (preppy again, not sure if its masculine enough though)
-Will (dont want william though)
-Ethan (maybe too trendy I dont know)

Like Ryan and Logan but those wont work (rhyme with other names in family and surname)

Anyone up to inspiring me?

-Alexander - love it, could use the nn Anders
-Owen - nice, goes well with Jack
-Cole - I agree, and getting trendy
-Nathan - love this one!
-Walker - I think this is great! goes well with Jack even though it is of a different style
-Drew - like this a lot, could be a nn for Andrew
-Will - I find thsi very nicknamey, if you don't want William, I would scrap it
-Ethan - too trendy

I love Jack and Oliver as brothers, but from your list, Owen, Walker, and Nathan are my faves.

Is Jack your son's given name? If so, maybe another strong, single-syllable name for his brother (or a name that can be shortened to such a nn)? ;)

Boyd
Hoyt
Heath
Hugh
Finn (Finnian, Finley/Findlay or Griffin if you want a longer form ... Jack and Finn sound great to me, btw )
Rhett/Rett (Garrett or Everett)
Noll (for Nolan or Oliver)
Reid
Rhys
Clive
Ward
Wade
West(ley)
Van (Donovan)
Fletch(er)
Law(ler)
Gray (full name Graham/Graeme works here)

You also might consider ...

Ronan -- not sure on the names or surname Ryan and Logan are similar to, so this may work
Oran or Ewan -- other "Owen/Ethan" type options
Colm -- Colman, Callum, or Malcolm, nn Colm, if you want a longer option ... maybe not as "cold" as simply Cole? You could also use Colin, nn Cole, or Callum/Callahan, nn Cal. ;)
Lennox

HTH, and good luck!

Well, befor I read your last line I thought of Ian and Evan but I'm guessing that they get nixed for the same reason as Ryan and Logan.

other ideas:

Leo
David or just Dave
Henry
Kevin
Keith
Leland
Grant
Maguire
Craig
Rory
Troy
Brody
Brogan
Casey
Corey

HTH!

If Jack is just Jack (not Jackson, John nn Jack, etc.) then ...

Will - my first choice from your list; I prefer William but

Wow you guys are awesome, the person I heard about this board from wasnt kidding. Great insight too.

Ive got the transfer all these ideas into a spreadsheet, becuase Im one of those insane list oriented people.

Jack IS just Jack, FYI. I like how you guys get that it made a difference (to me anyway) that he doesnt have a longer given name. Very cool. And Jack was one of those names I just always liked so after evaluting a million names before he was born, I ended up with Jack. Unfortnatley my "repository" of boys names ended there.

Keep the ideas coming! I just found out yesterday so I have 18 more weeks to agonize.

Good luck!

- Alexander - I find it common.
- Owen - I like this. It might end up being trendy, but if you have ancestors with this name than trendiness shouldn't be a problem
- Cole - I like this, too, but I think you're right. Maybe a warm mn like Henry would warm it up? Or maybe use the name Coleman with the nn of Cole?
- Nathan - It's all right. NMS
- Walker - It's all right. It'd work ^_^
- Drew - Not with Jack
- Will - How about Willis?
- Ethan - Probably is trendy, but it's still a fine name

Here are some other Irish names that are actually pronounceable/spellable, and that don't end with -an, that you can consider:

- Patrick - old fashioned, I know, but your son may not ever meet another Patrick growing up, and the nn Rick would go with Jack.
- Angus - It has a classic American nn, Gus
- Carson
- Cody
- Connor
- Cormac
- Desmond
- Neil (maybe spelled Niall)
- Quinn
- Seamus (even if this is pronounced SHAY-mus, with there being a Seamus in Harry Potter I think it's safe)

Good luck with #2!

congrats on #2!

Here are my thoughts:
Alexander - this seems too long next to Jack. Maybe Xander?
Owen - This is my favorite on your list. I think it works well with Jack and fits all of your criteria
Cole - I do not think this name is cold, but if you are iffy go with another name
Nathan - I would find another if DH dislikes it
Walker - this is a strong name that fits well with Jack
Drew - this seems like too much of a nickname. Jack works on its own, but I don't think Drew does
Will - I also do not like Will on its own, what about Liam? Jack and Liam sound great together.
Ethan - this is trendy, I would go with something else

Jack's little brother:
Asher
Griffin, nn Finn/Griff
Sean
Colin
Coner
Dean
Luke
Finn
Graham
Miller
Miles
Rhett
Everett
Ryder
Troy
Wyatt

Good luck,
Brooke

Hi there. Congrats on #2!

Jack is a great name. I love how strong & timeless it is. Here are my thoughts on your list for this new little fella:

-Alexander (preppy but nice, little concerned my cousin just named his son that)-I like Alexander/Alex a lot. Would your cousin's baby & your baby be close family to a lot of the same people? If so, I'd stay away from it.

-Owen (no idea where I am going with this one, have not clear with DH)-I really like this w/Jack. It's a great name.

-Cole (strong, irish, but a little cold sounding I think)-I like this.

-Nathan (Nate, simple, Dh not thrilled)-Jack & Nathan/Nate are really cute for brothers.

-Walker (Saw it in the newspaper today- told you I was sulkly)-This isn't my favorite, but it's not bad.

-Drew (preppy again, not sure if its masculine enough though)-I really love Andrew nn Drew. Andrew is definitly masculine enough.

-Will (dont want william though)-Will on its own is nms.

-Ethan (maybe too trendy I dont know)-I don't know. It is really popular, but not as classic as Jack.

I definitly like Owen & Nathan the best for you.

Here are a few more suggestions:

Alec

Aaron

Bennett

Benjamin

Beckett

Burke

Clark

Colin

David

Elliott

Finn

Grant

Henry

Ian

Luke

Max

Nolan

Peter

Ronan

Sam(uel)

Thomas

Tim(othy)

Hope this helps!
