I can't think of any way to get to it that wouldn't just get the kahl-yer pronunciation...except maybe by throwing an H in there...Cohlier? It looks a bit awkward, but it would make it clear. Or an e...Coelyer? I don't know.

Have you heard of Cotter? A friend has a son named Kotter (I don't really like the k...but they're Dutch) and it seems to be in the same "groove" as Cobb and Kolyer...

Maybe the person that mentioned Colyer/Kolyer (coal-yer) to me was just mispronouncing Collier...who knows.
