Name spelling/pronunciation

Hi all,

Input on a name we're strongly considering for our first child, a boy, is much appreciated. The name is a special one to us, as my husband's background is Persian, I am part Irish, and the name is both Persian and Irish (it also has Hawaiian and African-American roots). The pronunciation we would go with is the Persian pronunciation: the first syllable rhymes with the word "tea", and the second syllable rhymes with the boy's name "John". The *second* syllable is stressed, not the first.

These are my questions:

1. Which spelling makes it easiest to pronounce the name?

2. Which spelling makes it easiest to stress the second syllable?

3. Knowing the pronunciation, how would you spell the name?

4. How might you mispronounce the name spelled in these ways if you didn't already know the pronunciation?

a. Kyan
b. Keon
c. Kian
d. Kiyan
e. Keyon
f. Keyan
g. other?

Thank you SO much. Your feedback is much appreciated!
Amy :)

Keon sounds the best and is the only one that I automatically pronounced with your specifications.

Keyon would be 2nd choice.

This is what I think...

1. Which spelling makes it easiest to pronounce the name? Keon

2. Which spelling makes it easiest to stress the second syllable? Sorry...I think most people will stress the first syllable regardless of spelling.

3. Knowing the pronunciation, how would you spell the name? How is it spelled in Persian or Irish? I think Cian is Irish, and I really like this spelling. I would try to stick to those spellings, but I also like Kian.

4. How might you mispronounce the name spelled in these ways if you didn't already know the pronunciation? I would say Key-in, stressing the first syllable (rhyming with Ian).

Good Luck

The hardest part will be to get the stress on the 2nd syllable. Most of our names in English do NOT stress the 2nd of 2 syllables. It might just have to be a name which people eventually catch on to its proper pronunciation.

1. Which spelling makes it easiest to pronounce the name? PROBABLY KEYON

2. Which spelling makes it easiest to stress the second syllable? MAYBE KEYON

3. Knowing the pronunciation, how would you spell the name? ??

4. How might you mispronounce the name spelled in these ways if you didn't already know the pronunciation?

a. Kyan = Rhymes w/ Ryan
b. Keon = KEY-un
c. Kian = KEY-an
d. Kiyan = KY-an (not KEY)
e. Keyon = KEY-un
f. Keyan = KEY-an
g. other? = ??

Of yours, Keyon.

3. Knowing the pronunciation, how would you spell the name?

Maybe something like Kiyahn? Kiyaun? Keyaun? Keyahn? Kionn? Keonn? Kiahn?

4. How might you mispronounce the name spelled in these ways if you didn't already know the pronunciation?

a. Kyan = KY-un like Ryan
b. Keon = KEE-on like Leon
c. Kian = KEE-in like Liam
d. Kiyan = KEE-in or KEE-yan (or KEE-yon)
e. Keyon = KEE-on or KEE-in
f. Keyan = KEE-in or KAY-in or KEE-yan
g. other?

Keon makes the most sense to me, because it looks like Leon and I would pronounce it to rhyme with that.

Kyan, Kian, Kiyan - I would pronounce these to rhyme with Ryan

Keyon,

Regardless of the spelling used, I think that people will tend to stress the first syllable of the name. I'm not sure how that can be avoided.

Having said that, I think that "Keon" (1st choice) or "Keyon" (2nd choice) is best suited for the pronunciation of the name that you have described.

When I read your description of the name, I thought of the name "Deion" (as in Deion Sanders, the baseball player). So, "Keion" might be another possibility.

I think e or b. E is more likely to have the stress put on the second syllable though whereas the b might be said more like "Kee-un".

Wow, this is a difficult one! But I really like the sound of the name you are going for. Here's how I would pronounce the spellings you listed:

a. Kyan - I would say "KI-an" (rhymes with Ryan)

b. Keon - I would say "KEE-ON" (both syllables emphasized, like sponde) or "KEE-in"(i.e., second syllable very short)

c. Kian - I would say "KEE-in" (i.e., second syllable very short)

d. Kiyan - I would ask the parents or child whether it's "KEE-on" or "KI-on" (but with second syllable longer than in the name Ryan due to the -yan ending)

e. Keyon - I would say "KEE-ON" (both syllables emphasized, like sponde) or "KEE-in" (i.e., second syllable very short)

f. Keyan - I might say "kee-ON," or maybe "KAY-on" or "KAY-on" but actually I'd probably ask the parents/child to be sure

g. other? - If I were going for "kee-ON," I'd probably choose Kiyaan. I'm not wild about the spelling, but it's the only one that would get me to pronounce the name "kee-ON" immediately, on the first try. (I hope I am right about what you're going for; sorry if I misunderstood!)

I guess it would depend on what the actual names in question are. Like a previous poster, I'm assuming from the Kian spelling you were referring to the Irish name

I agree with the PP that I would just go ahead and use the persian spelling (or the Irish spelling and say it the Persian way). BUT out of your spellings the only one that really made sense to me was Keon.
