Is this name too long????
| Fri, 02-03-2006 - 4:09pm |
We are thinking of the name Zachary William Sutherland, does this name sound way too long....and if so what about Ryan William? We are stuck on this. We have one son and his name is Joshua Lee and we wanted something that wasn't too far out there. Thanks for your help!

I don't think its too long at all. I think it sounds nice. I like the alternative of using Rya, but that is because I love the name Ryan as well!

Well, I'm biased because I have a boy named Ryan William. I think either name is fine. Zachary William is longer than your 1st son's name but I don't think that matters.
OK, here's my straightforward opinion ... I like Ryan much better than Zachary but either name is fine. Zachary William Sutherland is not too long ... but I do prefer Ryan!
Absolutely not -- it's fine! My fn has 9 letters, and my ln 11, and so does DH's. Yes, it's a little long, but any name is long with a long last name. Nothing you can do about the last name, so I say pick a first name you like.
Good luck!

Zachary William Sutherland is perfectly fine. He'll be Zachary Sutherland or Zachary W. Sutherland 99% of the time and will probably be Zach Sutherland quite a bit, too.
I definitely wouldn't choose Ryan just because it's one syllable shorter than Zachary. Ryan is much trendier than Joshua or Zachary, and as with a lot of trendier boys' name, the girls are starting to use it. I think it's the "an" ending, which makes people think of "Ann".

I almost want to say yes, it's way too long, but only because I like Ryan even better! ;)
The length actually doesn't bother me, because most of the time he will be Zach Sutherland (assuming you want to use the shortened form ... if not, then I do think Zachary Sutherland is a bit of a mouthful).
Like I said, though, I really REALLY like Ryan Sutherland. It just flows a tad better in my opinion, and I don't know any little Ryans (only mid 20s-30s age group, really), whereas I know TONS of Zacharys, all under the age of 10 or so (and still popular for newborns as well, from the ones I've been seeing lately).
Neither name sounds horrible or anything, so you'll be fine no matter which one you choose. :) HTH!
