Named after Daddy

In my family, it is tradition that the first girl is named after her father, thus my first name. Career wise it helped me because a lot of calls came thinking I was a male at times, and I turned out to be a female. I would like to carry it on with my own daughter (when she gets here), but am a bit perplexed at how I could pull it off. My husband's name is Willie Ryan, and I dislike Wilhemena or anything that takes off the Willie, so my focus is on the Ryan... However, should I change the way it is spelled or should I keep it is as Ryan... Or do you know of a pretty take off of either, we have the middle name, Genelle for one of my fav aunts. Your advice is appreciated!

How about:

Willow instead of Wilhelmina?

For a girl I would change Ryan to Ryanne or Ryanna but you could keep the same spelling coz the 'an' make sure its not too masculine for a girl.

Good luck xxx

What a clever tradition! :)

The name Ryan can actually be used for a girl also. So you can keep the spelling as is, or you could use Ryann. Some variations of Willy you could consider are Wiley, Willa or Willow.

Good Luck :)

Hi there.

I actually really like Willa after Willie. What do you think of that one?

If you still want to stick w/something after Ryan, please don't call her Ryan. It's really masculine, not to mention popular for boys these days. What about Rhianna? That's beautiful! Or maybe Rhiannon?

Hope this helps.

I really like the other suggestions for Willa or Willow! How unique and it would carry on a great tradition.

I really love Ryan on a girl. (More than on a boy, actually.) It's one of those names that is still FAR more popular for a boy than a girl, but is beginning to creep up in popularity for girls as well.

Personally, I would keep the spelling as is. I don't like spellings of names and most of the suggestions I generally see for Ryan (ie Ryann, Ryanne, etc) look to me as if hey would change the pronounciation from RY-an to Ry-ANN. And I don't like that pronounciation at all. Also I think it's challenging enough for a girl to explain that she has a popular boys name, I wouldn't make her then explain that she also has an alternate spelling.

If Ryan is too masculine for your tastes, I'd suggest changing it altogether to a similar feminine name like Rhianna or Rhiannon. I also love Willa as an alternate to Wilhelmina.

Thank you so much for the suggestions and more are always welcomed. I like willow Genelle a lot though, and am not sure about Rhiannon, not sure about the pronunciation. I actually have a girlfriend named Reon (pronounced as it is read). Willa I am not crazy about, sounds like a cut off version of Willow. Any other suggestions are appreciated and once again, thank you, ladies!!

Wilhemina is not my favorite name either, but I know a little girl with that name, but they always call her Nina. It was a family name that they wanted to pass on, and they considered the other nicknames Willa and Mina/Mena, but liked Nina best. I just wanted to offer that suggestion as well.

Good luck! (Oh, and Rhiannon is pronounced "ree-ANN-on". I know one little girl with that mn and other with the mn Rhian "ree-ANN", and they've really grown on me.)

I knew a darling little girl named Ryan (that spelling) about 10 years ago. She's be about 17 now...so it's been done before! Stick with the traditional spelling.

I think it works better than Willie.

I really don't like Ryan much at all on a girl. Maybe Rylee instead? A more feminine spelling is Ryann. I much prefer using the Will names- Willa and Wilona are both nice.
