Need Feedback on a Name

Years ago, before I was even married, I decided that when I had a daughter, I was going to name her Lucy Eleanor. My dad's mother's name was Lucy and my mom's mother's name is Eleanor. I was always close to Lucy growing up, since she lived close by and now that I'm older, I've gotten closer with Eleanor.

When my husband & I got married, we talked about the future and kids and what we wanted to name kids. He said that he had no problems with Lucy Eleanor for a daughter's name. We found out not too long ago that we are having a baby. I obviously still like Lucy Eleanor if it's a girl, and so does he.

The problem is our moms. My mother, even though we talked about it in the past and she said that it's a nice way to honor them both, now says that the name is "too old sounding." And my mother-in-law has outright said that she hates it and that she'll be after us the whole pregnancy to change our minds.

Is Lucy Eleanor way too old sounding of a name? (I keep thinking that Lucy has come back to popularity with the character on 7th Heaven...) So far no one has complaints with the boy name we picked out, at least: Nicholas Samuel.

First of all, is your MIL's name Marie (Everybody Loves Raymond)

Tell her she had her chance to name all of her kids, and you don't need any help.

I am with all of those who say that Lucy Eleanor is a very beautiful name. You go ahead and name her that name. Some people don't have the sense the good Lord gave them to bite their tongues.

They are both great names. Stick with what you want. Once the baby is born your mother will find her to be the most perfect "Lucy Eleanor' who ever lived. It's a fine name, named for people you loved. I love it!

I personally am not into the old fashioned classics like Lucy and Eleanor, so I would probably have the same reaction as your mother if my daughter told me she was going to use that name. However, to me, the bigger problem is you having decided you will name your baby two names both from your side of the family, that's why the mother-in-law isn't happy.

I personally think you should choose a completely independent first name that you both like and then decide on one person to honor with the middle name. there will probably be some hurt feelings no matter which name you go with.

good luck

I love the name!!! Don't let them influence you. My DD is Eleanor Katherine and before she was born my mom & MIL just hated it. My mom said "it sounds like an ugly first lady" MIL was less obvious, she'd just say things like "Michelle is a nice name" Umm yeah but DH & I don't love it like we do Eleanor!

Now, however, both have grown to love it because they love her. I have had nothing but great feedback on her name over the last 7+ years. She loves her name & is proud of it. And Lucy is another name we have thought about too. But we have Joseph & Henry instead of a Lucy :P

Lucy Eleanor is a beautiful name. It honors your family, so just tell your mom & MIL that the names are not to be talked about. They had their chance, this is yours.

FWIW, my 7 year old Eleanor just said she thought Lucy Eleanor was a very cool name & that a Lucy Eleanor would be "really cute baby with red hair & hazel eyes"
