but with a more modern edge to it. We have a dear family friend named Mary and DH would like to name one of the twins after her (if one is a girl). I had been leaning toward Lauren or Megan, but am willing to change if I can think of a name that is similiar to Mary.

I didn't read thru the other responses, so I doubt my suggestions will be anything different. but I like Maura the best.

other possibilities: Marissa, Marina.

I just met a young woman with the name Maryla-- she was about 18-21 years old. Very pretty girl, too. I'm not sure of the pronunciation, but I would think it's Mah-RIL-lah.

Other than that, what about:

Marianna

Mariana

Marizia

Marina

Martina

Marya

Mariah

Myriah

Marion

Marian

just some ideas...

best of luck to you!

I adore Miriam........and Maritza is one of my faves. Said with its spanish pronunciation, muh-REET-zuh, I just love it. Mariana is also very nice, and Meredith.....with the bubbly nickname Merry. Marta is the spanish form of Martha and I believe comes from the same origin as Mary. Marisa/Marissa is also very nice. I just love Mar-names..........my dh and I once considered Marina.

How about Mari? It's said 'mar ee'. The mar isn't like Mary - it's more like Mark with an I.

or

Marys ("Mare-iss")

or

Mara (can pronounce either "Mare-uh" or "Mahr-uh")

or

Mariah
