Need help with girls name
| Wed, 09-26-2007 - 2:31pm |
We are expecting a 3rd child, a girl in 4 weeks. She will join her 2 big brothers Carson and Grayson. We have yet to decide on a name.
We are thinking:
Emerson Finley or Peyton. We are not dead set on the names and would definitely like help with a middle name for either since my husband is not real into Finley.
Also open to other names as well

I would go with Peyton since you already have two boys who

Carson and Grayson are both used for boys and girls, and Emerson and Peyton are, too; so in that sense, these names would all kind of go together.
Thank you all for your feedback, after all that is why I posted. I have been reading the posts without adding anything for quite some time and I am still sort of puzzled at how I hear my names as well as many others described as overused. I live an an urban area and have really yet to hear many other children with the same as my boys nor these two names that we have come up with. Nevertheless, I do like the ideas that you all have had.
I wonder though when names are so often described as "trendy", if in the past names like Jane and Grace etc...were considered the same. I actually consider names like these timeless. Unfortunately in the posts I am also hearing the same names over and over again.
I say if you like Peyton or Emerson then go with it! I personally do not know any girls or boys named either of those names. I think that Peyton is a little bit more feminine than Emerson though but I do like both names. I don't really like the mn Finley on a girl with a unisex name though. Finley just sounds more boyish to me.
I know a few Peytons, no Emersons personally. I've heard Carson out and about on both genders (it about curdled my blood the first time I heard someone call "Carson" at the pool and a little girl popped up.) I don't know any Graysons. But in the birth announcements...all of them, in the paper and both colleges I graduated from...they all pop up with varying degrees of frequency--starting with Peyton, then Emerson, then Carson (which I love, btw...it was my great-grandfather's name) and Grayson last.
The surname trend is running hot and heavy and these (along with Riley, Jackson, Mason) are some of the mainstays. If you look at the Social Security charts, Peyton was #138 and Payton was #163 for girls (if you combine them, they're somewhere up around #63.) Peyton is #154 for boys and Payton is #267 (total lands around #111.) Finley is #287 for girls and #886 for boys. Emerson is #305 for girls. Carson was #87 for boys and Grayson was #218 and Greyson #503 (total puts it somewhere around #181.)
I think the bigger issue for me would be that if I saw your children's names written down, I would assume that they were all of the same gender — and I wouldn't be sure whether you had 3 boys or 3 girls! I would tend to use a more feminine name for a girl, to distinguish her from her brothers. Good luck!

What about Ellery? It sends a slightly more feminine vibe and almost feels like a conglomeration of Emerson Finley.
I LOVE surnames and you'll find me encouraging the use of them on boys and girls. However, I do agree with some of the pp that you should distinguish your daughter from your sons. Since they both end in -son, try toying with surnames that end differently.
When using a surname on a girl, I also strongly encourage the use of a more feminine mn. It makes for such a catchy contrast and more clearly defines the name choice.
Best wishes!
