Okay, my sister needs help. She and my BIL are currently expecting a DD. My BIL (who is very into all things weird) wants to name the baby Aicy. Pronounced Icy (or like the drink), it is actually an old family name on our side. However my sister and everyone are worried that she will hate it as an adult and get teased a lot as a child.
My sister can't talk him out of it and is trying to find a name that she could use Aicy as a nn for. It can be anything however remotely related to Aicy (like starting w/ A,I or Cy sound, whatever). The baby's middle name will be Elizabeth and their last name starts w/ F and is a 3 syllable Italian name. Also she wants it 1-2 syllables, because DS's fn is short (Jude) and she wants them to "go" together.
Anyway any suggestions greatly aprreciated. Also any opinions, good or bad, on just naming the baby Aicy Elizabeth. TIA!
Katherine

Hmmm.... I am not as good at this as others on this site, but here goes...
What about Aileen (pronounced I-leen)
I can't think of others off the top of my head.

She can use my dd's name --------Eilish (Eye-lish).
I'll give it a try:
Aayshah
Azia
Inez
Ivy

Well, I have seen Icy/Icie used as a name before, so it's not unprecedented. I've come across a number of variations, many from 19th-century genealogical records, as well as some decidedly modern names for which it would be (in sound anyway, not sure about the Aicy spelling) a natural nickname.
Before I list a few, though, I want to mention that there is currently a character named Icy on one of my daughter's favorite cartoons, Winx Club. She's the ringleader of a gang of very nasty and shallow witches. There are now many toys, computer games, and other merchandise for the show (Daya wears Winx Club running shoes) and there is a doll of the character, so obviously it's well known among little girls. If the popularity lasts a few years, it could be pretty hard being an Icy, or Aicy, in primary school. You might want to suggest your BIL watch a few episodes of the show (the end of the first season in particular).
If he still insists, though, I have seen:
Ica, Iceanna, Icelynn, Iceiss/Icesis/Iceys/Icsis ('creative' spellings of Isis, which could also work), Ichelle, Icylene, Icylin, Icyline, Isandra, Isolina, Isolyn
A bit more of a stretch, but more established names:
Iscah, Isabel and variations, Isabeth, Isadora/Isidora, Isaura, Isela, Isolde/Iseult...
Or there is the modern French Ysanne, a compound of Ysabel and Anne, which I really quite like, pronounced ee-zanne, but perhaps close enough and two syllables too (since most of the above have more). I also really like Isolde, which also sticks to two syllables, though it's very rare. There's Eileen or Eilis (eye-lish)... there's also the form Ailis, which is closer to Aicy in spelling, but that's usually pronounced ay-lish.
Iris gives both a long I and a S/C sound, and is currently considered stylishly old-fashioned by many. Eirlys (ire-lis) also has both sounds and means 'snowdrop' in Welsh, which sort of suggests Icy by association as well as sound. Come to think of it, Irises also tend to pop up through the snow in spring, so both Iris and Eirlys have connotation and sound going for them.
Iscah is rarely used and not one I'd normally recommend, but it's Biblical, as is your nephew's name, Jude, and it's not at all a stretch to derive Icy from it. It's the name from which Shakespeare derived Jessica for 'The Merchant of Venice'. Another Biblical name is Prisca, of which Priscilla is a diminutive, you could certainly derived Icy from either of those. The similar Persis is Biblical too, as are Eunice, Berenice (or Bernice), Veronica, and the place names Lycia and Cilicia, any of which would work for Icy.
I hope something in there helps, I personally like Iris, Eirlys, Ysanne, Isolde, Eilish, Isadora, Veronica and Lycia.
Very much wishing your sister good luck talking him into a reasonable compromise,
Josie
I like several of the other posters' suggestions, but I wanted to add another idea. Is Elizabeth set in stone as the mn? If not, what about a name combination that would lead to Aicy? Like Aileen Cynthia? Or even something with the initials I.C. like Ivy Celeste or Isabelle Christine?
That's definitely a tough nn to find a full name for.
Stephanie
Stephanie and I had the same idea.....if it were me, I'd ditch Elizabeth as the mn and have the initials be I.C. ~ and, if I were your sister {or SIL sorry can't remember} I would make "Aicy" a Daddy-only nickname :)
{Ivy Celeste is beautiful, and that way "Aicy" isn't so far off}
Isabelle Catherine ~ this would be a good match for another DD w/ mn Elizabeth

Well, I'm having creative block :) Ivy Celeste is by far my favorite. Other than that, I can't think of any name Aicy would be a nn for.
