Hi! I just found out I'm having my 1st girl after 2DS and there seem to be a lot more names to choose from! Most of my list consists of pretty common names.... Kate, Kristin, etc. but the one name I actually like a lot but is sort of unusual is Scarlet. I am hoping for some honest opinions here since I do not like to share the baby's name with friends and family before they are born. I have a feeling my mother will HATE it, but maybe that's not a good enough reason to disregard a name I like! I also worry that she'll get the nickname "Scar". What do you all think??

It's a name that, when people 1st hear it, causes them to gasp & wonder what the parents are thinking. But it's pretty, actually, & if you really love the name I suggest using it! It's also a name that people will easily & quickly accept & grow to like.

It is different. I like different names. Who cares what you mom thinks. What middle name were you thinking of?

My mom continues to remind me that my now 5 year old niece's name still has not grown on her, so I'm sure to hear it for years to come on Scarlet! I was thinking Grace for the middle name. I am glad to hear most of you are at least not appauled at the name! The more I hear it the more attached I'm getting to it. Although I do have 4 months left and I'm known for changing names at the last minute!

What did your SIL name her children?

I think its BEAUTIFUL! It reminds me of Gone with the wind, which is my favourite book. The main character, as you probably know, is Scarlett O'Hara. I really like this name and its not very common at all. Maybe use it as a mn if you're not sure- I love the sound of Kristen Scarlett!

My SIL's children are Rebecca Carolyn (a pretty "safe" name by most standards!) and Owen George. The George was for my grandfather; my mom HATED Owen and spent the greater part of 9 months trying to convince my SIL to reverse the girl name because she HATED Rebecca.

Thanks! I may actually do that - use it for a middle name instead. But I'll feel like such a chicken because Scarlet is a "risky" name for me and I'm lacking the courage to just go with it! LOL! Maybe I just need to prepare my mom after she's born and kind of ease her into the name rather than just blurt it out and get the "GASP" reaction!

I'd have to say all those are pretty standard names (even Owen is becoming quite popular), so I'm assuming your mother will HATE any name she has not chosen herself. Tell her she got to name her own children and now it's your turn (and if she protests, just tell her to keep her mouth shut, because the discussion is over). hehehe Blunt, even mean maybe, but if it's the only thing that will keep her from driving you insane ... ;)

I think the name is lovely, by the way, and really like that it's not too overly used. It's been my experience that if you chicken out and use a safer, more "popular" name, you may regret it later on, but if you use the name you love, you'll most likely be happy with your decision in the end. So go for it! :)

HTH!

Congratulations!

After hearing you were thinking about the names Kate, Kristin, etc I was happy to read that you are considering Scarlet. It is a beautiful name and even though it is not common, it is not completely unheard of and she would stand out from all the common names that girls are given. In regard to nickames, don't let that influence your decsion on choosing a name as she may never get one related to her name. Also, don't worry about what your family thinks, as long as the baby is happy and healthy that is all the matters.

All the best,
Claire

I love Scarlet and I don't think it should have a nickname. Go for it!
