Need lots of help with my boy list
| Tue, 06-21-2005 - 4:06pm |
I am new here and need help with boys names. We have a girls name picked, but are stumped for a boy! I want something that is a real name, not a made up new name. DH is also very concerned about popularity and doesn't want a name that we will come across often. I need something also that is more than one syllable or can't be easily shorted to one syllable. Our list so far:
Alton
Eli
Truman
Ian
Griffin (possible nn Finn, can handle this being 1 syllable)
Theodore
Ewan
Asher
Miles
Abram
Any thoughts? or if you have any other suggestions of names that you think we might like I would be thrilled to hear tham. Thanks!!

Depending on the last name and other kids' names, of course:
The ones I would personally use from the list:
Ian
Theodore
Opinions on the others:
Alton - I heard it when I lived in North Carolina, but uncommon here in Boston
Eli - too short and too much like the very popular Ellie
Truman - nms unless it's a family name
Griffin - too trendy
Ewan - I would go for the more mainstream Owen
Asher - just don't like the sound.
Miles - it's getting more popular, but it feels a little "trying too hard" to me
Abram - too "long white flowing beard" Old Testament sounding for me.
======
Alton: Nothing about it seems distinctive to me, whether smart, strong, sincere--just kind of blank.
Eli: I'm sorry, but this name is nerdy to my ears.
Truman: A popular dog's name in my area. Sorry!
Ian: Like it a lot!
Griffin (possible nn Finn, can handle this being 1 syllable): Also like this a lot, and if you really have to use a nickname for this short name (?) I like Finn too.
Theodore: Love this one, and you have choice in nn's, from Theo to Teddy to Ted. Traditional but not overused.
Ewan: I'm in love with Ewan McGregor and his cool name. Good choice, if a little ahead of its time.
Asher: This name feels kind of trashy, low-class to me, sorry.
Miles: Not my taste. Can never get geeky Miles from Murphy Brown out of my head.
Abram: I like it, but it has an older-man feel about it to my ears.
Good luck!
Alton - I'm not crazy about this one
Eli - It's ok ... not great but ok
Truman - No
Ian - I really dislike this name
Griffin (possible nn Finn, can handle this being 1 syllable) - I like it!!
Theodore - Not crazy about it
Ewan - I like this! Unique yet not odd.
Asher - Iffy
Miles - Dislike
Abram - I really like Abram. I considered it w/ boy #4 2 years ago
In order of preference (of those I like)...
-Abram
-Ewan
-Griffin
-Eli
Hi, and welcome to the board. I wish you LOTS of luck with the baby naming process!!
Alton--NMS, also think this would get shortened to Al.
Eli--Cute! I like Elijah NN Eli.
Truman--alittle old fashioned for a little boy in my opinion.. I once had a dog named Truman.
Ian--Very cute! I like this one!
Griffin (possible nn Finn, can handle this being 1 syllable)--VERY nice as well.. first time I seen Finn as NN for Griffin... I LIKE IT!
Theodore--NMS.... Alvin, Simon, Theodore (can't get this out of my head when I hear it! sorry)
Ewan--I think this one will get confused for Evan alot.
Asher--CUTE!!! Very nice, I also like Ashton.
Miles--This one is okay.
Abram--I really like this name, after seeing a guy on MTV with it.
Griffin GETS MY VOTE!
Suggestions for you:
Campbell
Trevor
Xavier
Tyson
Trevon
Teagan
Kelton
Dominick
Braxton
Perry
Maverick
Kendrick
Gavin
Garrison
Matteo NN Teo
Waylon
Antonio
Nehemiah
Silas
Finley
Tucker
I like Ian the best of your list. It's definitely one of my favorites.
I like Griffin, but NOT the nickname Finn
The rest just really aren't my style
good luck
Alton - Isn't that the name of the science guy on the Food Network? Alton Brown?
Eli - liked someone else's post of Elijah and then nn Eli
Truman - nah, suffed shirt comes to mind
Ian - Nice
Griffin - A lion comes to mind, and the Harry Potter house Griffyndor
Theodore - Nope, this shirt is too starched
Ewan - As a little kid, his friends won't know how to say his name when read, same for
Ian I guess. That could be a pain for him.
Asher - nms
Miles - some teasing could be done, its a distance.
Abram - had a friend with this name, no complaints.
So a lot to be said about ea name, I know, but when picking names you have to think of every angle, including possible teasing from kids. Remember now matter how much you and you dh love the name, its your son that has to live in the world with it.
I like Eli...I really like it is a nickname for Elias too.
