thanks to all of you who responded to my "plea" LOL! I really enjoyed the suggestions and got some great ideas.
So far, my favorites are Caleb, Samuel, Mathias, Isaac, Cain, and Malachi.
Let me know what you all think or if you can think of more, that would be great.
Thanks again.

I love this list. Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with any of these choices. Here are my thoughts individually...

Caleb -- Love. Absolutely love this name. I really like the nn Cal also. It seems very sporty and "cool" to me.

Samuel -- you already know how much I love this :)

Mathias -- great name. I don't think you have to worry too much about people calling him Matt. It seems less likely than if his name was Matthew anyway. I used to nanny for a little boy named Matthias. No one EVER called him Matt.

Isaac -- I don't LOVE this name, but I do like it. And, like Samuel, this name has a great biblical reference about a longed-for child.

Cain -- I love this name. I do think that if you are very religious/spiritual, people are going to make the biblical connection, which is not very flattering.

Here are my favorite:

Luke
Timothy
James
Job
Micah

Luke and Micah rank far and away above the others. I also like Malachi and Samuel, though. I would never, ever use Cain, but that's just me.

Of the ones you listed, I've got to go with Samuel. I love the name, the Biblical associations surrounding it, and I think the nn Sam is really cute. Sam and Luke go great together, IMO.

Caleb - A great name.

Hm. If I met someone named Cain, I would really wonder, frankly. To people who have a strong religious background or who are religious, this name has very serious connotations. I mean, the man was cursed by God in the story which is just disturbing no matter what your take on religion is!

Why not Abel?

Actually, if you're going with the first family, I'd suggest Seth over Abel. After all, Seth was the son given to Adam and Eve to comfort them after they lost Cain and Abel. So it sort of still has that "longed for/wished for" feeling of Isaac and Samuel, and it's a one-syllable name, which I know you wanted. Also, I just think Seth is a great name: classic and timeless, but not nearly as popular as a lot of other Bible names. It's a long-time favorite of mine.

Oh, good point Annie. It's also a bit more common, but not too common. :-)

I'm partial to Samuel (we're seriously considering it for our child).

You might also think about:
Nathaniel (Gift of G-d)
Jonathan (Gift of G-d)
Zeb (G-d's gift)
Emmanuel (G-d is with us)
Asher (blessed)
Reuben (behold, a son)
Saul (asked for)
Toby/Tobias (G-d is good)
Zachary/Zachariah (G-d remembers)

I am not a religious person, but I do like most of the Biblical names. Of your choices I really like Caleb and Isaac. But I have to ask...why Cain? Of all the Biblical names to choose from, why name your son after a man who killed his brother? If you are going that route...I would say choose Abel over Cain, or like another poster said...Seth (I LOVE Seth!). I have seen the name Cain several times, and was wondering why a parent would choose this name. (Just curious...no condemning meant!)
