My good friend and coworker has recently found out she is expecting. She is having a really difficult time trying to name this baby. She is just now 12wks so she is nowhere near being able to find out the sex. Her and her husband have two kids already Madison who is 7 and Gunner who is 6. She wants some unique and different, along the lines of Gunner. Madison was

First of all, your friend needs to remember it is much more important to love the name than to find something to match the other kids' names. Many different styles of names sound fine together, especially when you factor in the age difference of her kids!:)

Girls--

Emery - If we're thinking in terms of matching styles, this is, by far, my favorite. I like this name, anyway.

Lydia- See, this is much different than Madison, but I LOVE the contrast of the whole silbing set.

Ginger- This is my name. I like it. A lot of people view it as a "dog name" in the last 15 years or so. In this case, I wouldn't suggest it. It's too similar to Gunner.

Boys--

Jagger- Her hubby vetoed that right off the bat.

Brecken NN Breck - I love this name. I think it sounds fantastic with Gunner, especially.

Talon - This is another one that falls right in with Gunner. It's edgy and offsets Madison. Thumbs up!

Rylan - More contrived than the others on the list.

Ryder - I really like this one, in her case. I particularly like that it doesn't end the same as Madison. Brecken, Rylan or Talon COULD be perceived as girl names next to sister Madison. This is my pick on the list!

Suggestions-

Girls- She could go with another surname for another girl without choosing one as popular as Madison. This would work well:

Madison, Gunner & Ellery
Madison, Gunner & Sloane
Madison, Gunner & Presley
Madison, Gunner & Daughtry
Madison, Gunner & Ellis
Madison, Gunner & Arden
Madison, Gunner & Reagan
Madison, Gunner & Berkeley
Madison, Gunner & Waverly
Madison, Gunner & Kerrigan
Madison, Gunner & Carrington
Madison, Gunner & Kinley
Madison, Gunner & Regan

Or something edgy and hip:
Madison, Gunner & Sage
Madison, Gunner & Fallon
Madison, Gunner & Danica
Madison, Gunner & Halle (hally)
Madison, Gunner & Sienna
Madison, Gunner & Brinn
Madison, Gunner & India

Boys:
Madison, Gunner & Cabot
Madison, Gunner & Channing (which I LOVE for a girl too)
Madison, Gunner & Hart
Madison, Gunner & Nash
Madison, Gunner & Saxon (ends in -n like Madison but it's so strong, it's obvious it's a boy and girl)
Madison, Gunner & Segar
Madison, Gunner & Seamus (shay-mus)
Madison, Gunner & Lars
Madison, Gunner & Holt
Madison, Gunner & Rhett

Let us know what she thinks!

Hi there.

Congrats to your friend!

Madison & Gunnar are pretty different, but they do actually fit together. We'll try to think of something a bit less common then Madison though, which by the way was not really unheard of in 1999. It was #7 on the SSA list.

Here are my thoughts:

Girls--

Emery-This actually works sort of well stylewise, although I don't personally love it.

Lydia-I love Lydia, but it seems so soft & feminine next to Madison.

Ginger-That's just nms & out-dated. I don't know.

Suggestions-

Amity

Adrienne

Bryn

Delaney

Kaya

Kyla

Samara

Tessa

Zoe

Boys--

Jagger- Her hubby vetoed that right off the bat.-Too bad. This is cute w/Gunnar.

Brecken NN Breck-I like this a lot in general & w/her kids names.

Talon-That's nms. Too eagle clawish.

Rylan-Meh. This seems made up.

Ryder-Very nice.

Suggestions-

Bracken

Burke

Beckett

Carter

Crispin

Catcher

Carson

Dalton

Dawson

Daily

Jasper

Parker

Spencer

Tucker

Thatcher

Weston

Zane

Hope this helps!

With Madison and Gunner ...

Girls -- Emery, Lydia and Ginger

Ginger is too close to Gunner, IMO, and although it's a completely opposite style, I actually LIKE Lydia as the baby sister (after all, styles evolve throughout our lives, and perhaps she'd be happiest with a more feminine option this time around ... and that's fine). ;) If she wants the girls' names to somewhat "go together," however, she's on the right track with Emery, but a more mainstream gender-bender name might be more her taste. Even if she doesn't realize it, Madison has been in the top ten since 1997. It was number 7 in 1999 when she named her own, and number 3 last year, so not like it was unheard of then and suddenly shot up, KWIM? Keeping that in mind, perhaps another more common unisex or masculine name would appeal. These are all in the top 300 for girls:

  • Taylor
  • Sydney
  • Avery
  • Riley
  • Aubrey
  • Jordan
  • Bailey
  • Kennedy
  • Shelby
  • Peyton/Payton
  • Kendall
  • Reagan/Regan
  • Reese
  • Delaney
  • Camryn/Cameron (I'd stick with Cameron, since she didn't use a kre8iv spelling like Maddisyn for her first dd)

Conversely, if she wants another unisex/surname/masculine name for a second dd, but not one that's become overly-common, she could use something more refreshing/unusual, like:

  • Eliot
  • Finley
  • Fallon
  • Rowan
  • Teagan
  • Dorian
  • Hadley
  • Avalon
  • Eleri/Ellery (separate origins/meanings)
  • Larkin/Lorcan
  • Paisley
  • Waverly
  • Tierney
  • Flannery
  • Ellis

*** assuming origin/heritage didn't influence their choices for now. I'll address that some below. ;)

Boys--

Obviously, Jagger is out (and too similar to Gunner anyhow), as is Ryder. I'd avoid another -er ending. They tend to come across as too obviously matchy.

As to the others, Talon seems MUCH too violent, especially when paired with Gunner (immediately brings to mind bullets and claw-torn flesh ... no thanks). Rylan seems to suit her style, but could easily be seen as a trendy, feminine name next to Madison (both are used for girls, and next to uber-masculine Gunner, it seems an easy assumption). That leaves Brecken, which I actually think is quite a nice fit. ;)

Some others that seem fitting with Gunner/Gunnar ...

Girls:

  • Freya
  • Thora
  • Berit
  • Dagny
  • Viola

Boys:

  • Torsten
  • Rafe (Ralph/Rafferty)
  • Leif
  • Alvis
  • Albin
  • Lukas/Lucas
  • Axel
  • Hemming
  • Henrik
  • Kennet
  • Konrad/Conrad
  • Simon
  • Viggo

HTH ;)

WOW! You ladies have some many awesome ideas. I am definatly taking all of these to her. I suggested Weston and she loved it but the subdivision she leaves in is Westin Park. So its a no. I love the Ellery suggestion and I know she will to.

Thanks!
