Hello ladies...

We are expecting our second ds in March and we have decided to name him Shepherd Tyson...Tyson being my dh's middle name (yeah I know....reminds you of Tyson chicken:). Our first son's name is Samuel Tate so we thought it went well....

Anyway,we haven't really told anyone we are expecting ds 2 let alone the name. But the people we have told kind of bagged on it. I am just needing some input as to if this name is really too weird.

Seriously honest opinions here...you wont hurt my feelings...after all, we get to decide in the end right?:) But I'd really like some fedback on it.

Thanks ladies

*hugs*

I like Shepherd Tyson. I think it sounds like a breath of fresh air from all the boy names that are recycled over and over again. I think the name sounds strong yet compassionate. And I like how you decided to have matching initials with your first son. I think the names sound good together. But please remember I am new to the boards and so I am still learning all the ins and outs of good names!!

I did find it funny that you thought people would immediately get the "chicken" connection with Tyson. Just so you know, I live in Iowa, not too far from a Tyson plant and I didn't even catch it when I heard it... so if it gets by me, I think you should be ok. And besides I think it might just be a midwest thing anyway!! He he he.

By the way, everyone loved my first DDs name, and were just ok with DD #2's name, so I think its just hard to please all the people all the time. Good luck with telling everyone of the pregnancy (I have to think its gotta be getting at least a little obvious by now!!) and hopefully you will find others that will like the name as well.

Shepherd is OK (you have to be prepared for the teasing, though) but I don't like the matching initals thing. It's too cutesy, and plus if you have a third you might get pigeonholed into picking a name you might not really like just because you've run out of good S and T names.

As long as you're aware of the teasing potential and prepared to deal with it, I think it could be a fine name. Neither name bothers me on it's own, honestly (especially Tyson, since it is a family name and common surname, not to mention the fact that, once you get past the poultry association, it really isn't a bad name at all).

However, I will admit that the word shepherd, paired with the commen brand name Tyson, did in fact make me think of a man who would be caring for chickens (in other words, a chicken herder ... obviously, I have no idea what such a person is really called, but that is what I thought of LOL).

As someone else mentioned, the matching sibling initials are what would bother me, especially if you are indeed planning on having more children and feeling obligated to continue the trend -- Shelby Theresa, Susanna Tabitha, Sean Thomas, etc. would be a bit too matchy/cutesy for me, especially once the little tykes were no longer so little (cutesy gets old, KWIM?). However, if this is it for you and you really just happen to like the name, then I think the different beginning sounds should make the two stand alone well enough (ie. Samuel and Shepherd, Sam and Shep, etc. ... not too Ssssss heavy IMO).

Anyway, HTH! :)

It isn't really my style at all. I love Samuel Tate, but Shephard Tyson just seems too out there for me. I like original names, but this one just isn't my favourite.

Actually, I kind of like Shephard Tyson. We have some cousins with a little boy named Stephen Shephard. And Jerry Seinfeld names his boy Sheppard. I don't think it's too out there or anything. I also know a little boy named Tyson. It does kind of remind me of the chicken, but it's still a decent name. More original than Tyler.

If you like the name, go for it. No matter what name you pick, there is going to be SOMEONE who doesn't like it. And if someone doesn't like it, they'll get used to it. I didn't reallly like the names my SIL picked for her girls, but now they've grown on me, and I don't think anything of it. I kind of like the names now.

Hope this helps. Shephard Tyson is adorable, IMO. :>)

I like it. I love original names. This is why I will not tell family or friends our names prior to birth. It's a lot harder to say yuck to a name when there's a cute little baby.

Ladies thank you for your input....
I am pretty well aware that this might not be everyone's favorite:)

To answer some questions: No, this isn't our last one Lord willing...hoping for a couple more...and the same initals just kind of happened....wasn’t on purpose.

I really like the name...I too wasn’t fond of the names my sil gave her girls but not I can't imagine them being called anything else!

So keep any opinions coming! You guys are the best!!
Kathy

P.S. The subject should say need iNput...ugh...I can't spell sometimes!!!:)

I like Shepherd Tyson, I think it sounds nice and I like using family names as middle names. I don't generally like the matching initials thing, but there are a ton of awesome S and T names out there (btw, Samuel and Tate are two of my all-time favorite names) so as long as you aren't planning on a dozen kids, it should be relatively easy to keep up the pattern if you want to. If you aren't sold on Shepherd yet (or just want a suggestion for the future) I'm absolutely in love with the name Sawyer and it seems like it would be a perfect fit for you.

Good luck!
