New here question about boys name...

Hi, I am expecting #3 in January. The name we have picked for this little boy is Squire. I told my family yesterday and they thought the name was awful. What do you think? We have two girls already Abigail and Mary Jane. I checked the social security index and Squire hasn't been in the top thousand names for any year since 1890. So it is a really uncommon name. I am looking for something uncommon but not weird. Help Please!

Hmmm...honestly, I can't decide whether I like it or not. If you love it and are set on it, it's different, but certainly not "awful" as your family says. Use it. If you're still debating, the only thing that makes me hesitate is that it conveys money and status to me (upper class English, perhaps). That connotation kind of reminds me of all the Tiffanys and Sterlings of the 80s, and the way their names were meant (by some) to suggest wealth.

Anyway, that's just my connotation. I'm probably way off! Maybe look at a list of popular English names to get more ideas?

YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT HOW THE KIDS WILL TREAT HIM WITH THAT AS I FIRST NAME MAYBE AS A MIDDLE NAME IT WOULD WORK BUT I DON'T LIKE IT AS A FIRST NAME

If you really like the name, it doesn't matter what anyone else says...

It's an unusual name, but it's not really weird. As an old-fashioned name, it goes well with Mary and Abigail, IMO. If you like it, use it!!

Squire isn't as awful as your family wants you to believe it is :) If you love the name, keep it but keep it to yourself til the baby is born :-) Once little Squire arrives, no one will have anything negative to say about his name {and if they do ~ oh well! :-)}

I like it and I love Mary and Abigail.

Thank you, Thank you for all of your responses. It was so nice to have a sounding board. We have decided to keep Squire as a possibility but to look into other names as well. I don't think that we will actually name this baby until after he arrives - at which time it will be too late for anyone to give opinions. - Emaybee

Haven't read the other posts, but Squire Boone came to my mind.

I don't think it fits in with Abigail and Mary Jane in the least

and it's not just unusual, it is weird

a Squire is some type of fighting war figure, isn't it?

I'm with your family on this one

good luck though
