The new name for DD!!

Soooooooo excited and happy. DH and I have "finally" committed to our DD's new name (My first thread is below somewhere in the "Girls" section which tells the whole story about how/why we are renaming our DD.).

Tess Samantha Lynn

There is a possibility of adding the "a" to Tess to become Tessa Samantha Lynn. I know, flow is not exactly right, but DH thinks it would be better to have the "a" there on the birth certificate and nn Tess...better than it not being there and somewhere down the road really wishing that it was (say, in the future, if she is always looking for keychains, pens, Xmax ornaments, etc., with her name but can only find Tessa and no Tess). She will be "Tess" to us and at school though. ANY opinions on that are appreciated!!!

Anyway, this is her name as it appears on the birth certificate now with Tess(a) added as the first name and Samantha Lynn will be moved to middle name status. What is your opinion on 2 middle names. I know it is becoming popular. We would not even be contemplating this but I was informed by my father that my mother was "very upset" that we were dropping the "Lynn" and changing the name to Tess Samantha (as "Lynn" is her middle name...mine too, and really DD was given this mn with me in mind...I just don't have the heart to tell my mother otherwise!!). It personally has no sentimental hold over me.

How do you fill forms out (school, doctor's office, etc.) from now on with 2 middle names involved?? We will always have to use "Samantha Lynn" as the middle name or can DH and I take it upon ourselves to shorten it on all of her forms to just "Samantha" as the mn (and just not tell my mother!!LOL!). TY guys once again for all of your help, support, and suggestions. I really appreciate them!

PS...To all of those who "voted" for the name Zelda...I really hate that we cannot use this name, but we decided that in our situation, it was just not going to work (especially after my mother's reaction). But, I promise, every time I see/hear that name for a child, I will smile and say a little prayer to my grandmother and think what a beautiful name for a little girl!

Well personally I think it's a very nice name but I have to admit I like Tessa a little bit better... of course I have a 9 y/o DD named Tessa so I'm biased. Just so you know my DD Tessa goes ONLY by Tessa and she absolutely LOVES her name. She thinks it's very pretty and loves that it's not one of those names that 3 other girls in her class have too. I think she's proud of that.

As for two middle names. Well, all of my kids have two middle names actually. They each have a middle name we picked for them in addition to a family surname that is no longer in use in our families. Like my DD Tessa is Tessa Grace Pearson - Pearson was my Great Grandmothers maiden name. All my kids have that. When it comes to paperwork for school as a rule I don't use their 3rd names. I mean it's on their social security cards and birth certificates but it's not on our insurance cards or their school forms. I just think it's easier. They know what their names are and two is enough for filling out all the REEMS of paperwork that comes with kids in school so we stick to that! LOL!

Good luck and I hope it goes well! We had DS's name changed after he was born so I KNOW that it can be a big pain but it's well worth it in the end :D

Well of course I'm mourning the loss of Zelda , but I do think your solution is probably the easiest transition overall. You get your Tess, which I know you wanted (and already having her there in your arms, I'm certain the name already fits), and she doesn't "lose" the name she was originally given. It just moves over a notch. ;)

I have to say, I adore Tessa! I think it's an adorably

I love the name Tessa, that's on our list too. Tess is beautiful too. I think the 2 mn thing is nice, especially since it's connected to family. Just in case this matters, most kindergarten and primary grade teachers require the children use their full first name at school and will call them by that name (Rosemary instead of Rosie etc) I was a teacher before a mom. :) So I say if you love Tess more than Tessa you should go with that. :)
Good luck!

Tess Samantha is hard to say because the Ss run together with Tess ending in S and Samantha starting with S

Tessa Samantha works a little better - me, I'm not not into the double middle name thing, no matter what the reason - it is cumbersome

me, I think if you really need to use all those names the way to go would be Tessa-Lynn as a double name and then Samantha - Tessa-Lynn Samantha

I don't mean to tread jack here, but I have never heard of this. What do you mean by require, that you force a child to use a name that she/he doesn't go by, doesn't like, or even that his/her family doesn't like but felt obligated to use for family reasons? What if there are three Williams in the class, but they all use different nns? Would you require them all to be William A., William B., and William C., rather than Will, Billy and Liam?

This just seems crazy ridiculous to me, any one hear about this happening at other schools?

Yikes, didn't mean to hit a sore spot. I am from MA, and in teaching pre-K and Kindergarten there, the teachers use their full name on papers and school work. So, yes, they go by their first name and last initial. I'm just saying what we do here, maybe it's not everywhere.
I feel like that response was a little harsh. I was only trying to help.

To haydybear: Here in Massachusetts, when children are learning to write their names in the early grades, they must learn to write their full, given name -- that is their name, after all! So if there are three Williams in a class, then they will each be writing "William A." "William B." and "William C" on their papers. The children are usually addressed as Billy, Liam and Will, but they must learn to write their "proper" names. Does that make sense?

To the OP: Congratulations to you! Tess/Tessa is an adorable name! :)
