Hi,
I'm looking for a beautiful, strong girl's name that can have a cute/pretty nickname.
A few examples that are on our list:
Elizabeth nn Lily - do you think enough people know that Lily can be a nn for Elizabeth or is this confusing?
Margaret nn Meg - I really like this - but do you think Meg is boring?
Beatrice nn Bea - maybe too old fashioned?
Edith nn Edie - maybe too old fashioned?
Evelyn nn Evie - maybe too old fashioned?
Amelia nn Mia - not sure Mia sounds best with last name.
Thank you in advance for your help - it is much appreciated!!

Hello,
You've got really beautiful, classic names on your list!
I don't think I've ever heard of Lily short for Elizabeth, but that doesn't mean people won't get the hang of it. I like it!
Meg short for Margaret is adorable, but it would be a shame if people just assumed it was short for Megan. Have you considered Daisy or even Maisie? Both originally nn's for Margaret I believe.
I'm not crazy about Bea, but maybe just because I like Beatrice so much on its own...
And again, Mia is cute, but I think I like the full version better.
Have you considered Mary, nn Molly or Polly? Or Rosemary nn Rosie or Romy? I love these.
All the best!
Amy can also be a nickname for Amelia. Perhaps that goes better with your last name.
Other nicknames for Margaret are Maggie/Megan/Meggie/Marge/Margie/Peggy/Peg.
With the nn Lily, people will likely assume her name is Lilia/Lillith/Lillian/Lily/etc.
Other ideas:
Abigail - Abby/Gail
Addison - Addie
Annabelle - Ann/Anna/Annie/Belle
Anastacia - Ann/Anna/Annie/Stacie
Andrea - Andi
Kathryn - Kathy/Kate/Katie/Kay/Kath
Leticia - Lettie/Tish/Tisha/Lee
Victoria - Vicki/Tori
Best of luck!
possible nn :
Other ideas:
Charlotte
My own name is a good strong name and its official nn is Hatty which is cute.
or how about Charlotte, nn could be Lottie or Charlie.
Or Georgina nn Georgie or even Gina
Rosemary nn Rosie?
Agnes nn Aggie.
hope those ideas help!
Elizabeth nn Lily - do you think enough people know that Lily can be a nn for Elizabeth or is this confusing? - to me, confusing. If you really want Lily, use Lillian or Liliana - or I like Libby as nn for Elizabeth
Margaret nn Meg - I really like this - but do you think Meg is boring? I like Meg, think Margaret is absolutely too old fashioned. how about Meg for Megan
Beatrice nn Bea - maybe too old fashioned? - really old
Edith nn Edie - maybe too old fashioned? - older yet than the above to and not pretty
Evelyn nn Evie - maybe too old fashioned? - slightly less old than the above 3.
Amelia nn Mia - not sure Mia sounds best with last name. - best of one this bunch (all are too old-fashioned for my tastes) but would prefer Amy as nickname for Amelia - alternative - and I LIKE this - Amalia - nickname Molly
Here are a few suggestions along the above lines, but maybe not quite so old fashioned
Abigail - Abby
Allison - Allie
Anastasia - Stasia
Belinda - nicknames are tricky here though, but I love this name, so underused
Caroline - Carrie
Christina - Christy
Corinne - Cori
Carina - Carrie
Delaney - Laney
Gabriella - Ellie (personally I don't like this, but it seems to fit the criteria you're looking for - what I really dislike is Gabby for the nickname)
Jacqueline - Jackie
Jocelyn - Jocie
Josetta - Josie
Melinda - Mindy
Natalie - not really a good nn, Nat or Talie? Talia?
Naomi - also no nn
Natasha - Tasha
Olivia - Livie
Rebecca - Becky
Stephanie - Stephie
Sabrina - Bree
Sophia - Sophie
Samantha - Sammi
Victoria - Tori
good luck
I just had to post, my Grandmother's name was Elisabeth (and it's my first middle name!) and she went by Lily as a nickname. I doubt people will be completely confused by an Elisabeth/Lily any more than they are an Elisabeth/Libby.
My favorite name off your list is Beatrice/Bea, want to second Josephine/Josie (or Posie/Jo/JoJo/Fina (I call my Josephine, Fifi these days, diva that she is!) but will also submit some of my favorite old fashioned names (with a nickname) for your perusal:
Adele - Della
Agnes - Nessa
Annora - Nora
Cecilia - Cece
Clementine - Teena
Guendolen - Gwen or Wendy
Louisa - Ouida
Marguerite - Meg, Maggie or Daisy
Minerva - Minnie
Penelope - Penny or Nell/Nellie
Rosmary/Rosalie - Romy/Rosie
HTH!
The names you have already picked out are really lovely, and not too 'old' by any stretch-they are all classics!
Elizabeth- Lizzy, Ellie, Eliza, Ella, Beth, Bess, Betsy, Libby, Lissy, and I think Lily works just fine!
Amelia- Mia, Mimi, Millie.
Beatrice- Trixie
Genevieve- Jenny, Jen, Vivi, Eve, Evie, Neve, Nevie.
Anneliese- Anne, Annie, Anna, Nellie/Nell, Liese, Liesel
Eleanor(a)-Elly, Ella, Nell, Nelly, Lena, Nora, Norah
Honora- Nora, Norah
Susanna- Susie, Sanna, Sanne, Sannie, Sukie/Sookey, (and at a stretch)Sadie
Matilda- Tilly, Tilda, Mattie
Winifred- Winnie, Freda, Freddie
Florence- Flora, Flossie, Florrie, Flo.
hope that helps!

Elizabeth nn Lily - do you think enough people know that Lily can be a nn for Elizabeth or is this confusing? . . . I love Elizabeth, but really don't get the Lily connection. My grandmother was Lena and people called her Libby, my aunt was Thelma and she was called Tiffie, another aunt was Goldie and she went by Gwen. That doesn't mean that those are "nicknames" for their given names, only that those are pet names used by the family. If you want to use Lily then use it, but I think she'll have to do a lot of explaining.
Margaret nn Meg - I really like this - but do you think Meg is boring? . . . If my DS had been a girl his name would have been Margaret. We hadn't decided if we would use Meg or Maggie though. I like both of those. Daisy is also great and fresh sounding.
Beatrice nn Bea - maybe too old fashioned? . . . I like this and have heard of three baby Beatrices in the past few years. Bea is cute. Also, have you thought of Beatrix?
Edith nn Edie - maybe too old fashioned? . . . I don't like Edith at all. It is unattractive to my ears. If you like Edie how about Eden?
Evelyn nn Evie - maybe too old fashioned? . . . THis is nice. I especially like the British pronounciation of Eve-a-lin.
Amelia nn Mia - not sure Mia sounds best with last name. . . . Amelia is nice. If Mia doesn't work with your LN how about using Amy?
Hi there. I love girl names like this! Here are my thoughts on your list-
Elizabeth nn Lily - do you think enough people know that Lily can be a nn for Elizabeth or is this confusing?-I love both Elizabeth & Lily. I don't know if most people are aware that Lily is a nn for Elizabeth, but big deal. They'll figure it out.
Margaret nn Meg - I really like this - but do you think Meg is boring?-This is nms, but it's not boring.
Beatrice nn Bea - maybe too old fashioned?-Nah, I like it a lot! Bebe is also sweet for a little one.
Edith nn Edie - maybe too old fashioned?-No, it's adorable!
Evelyn nn Evie - maybe too old fashioned?-I like Evelyn, & really like Evie. I think it may have some pronounciation problems though. Is it Eh-vee or Ee-vee?
Amelia nn Mia - not sure Mia sounds best with last name.-I like Amelia & Mia both just fine, but it just doesn't seem to make sense as a nn to me. What about Amelia nn Lia? Is that better w/your ln?
Here are some suggestions for you-
Amelia nn Lia
Elizabeth nn Bess
Elizabeth nn Libby
Elizabeth nn Ellie
Elizabeth nn Zizi-I just love this!
Emilia nn Millie
Genevieve nn Evie or Ginny
Harriet nn Hattie
Isadora nn Izzy or Isa or Dora...all so cute!
Josephine nn Josie or Fifi
Johanna(h) nn Josie
Lucille nn Lucie
Margaret nn Maisie
Rose nn Rosie
Hope this helps, & keep us posted!
